One Lion’s Journey Approximately a month ago, a lone male lion was translocated from Liuwa Plain National Park to Kafue National Park after repeatedly leaving the park and becoming a conflict risk for nearby communities. On his second excursion, he killed cattle, prompting urgent intervention by our Government partners and African Parks to ensure public safety. Since his release into Kafue, he’s been making moves: Covered over 200km Crossed the Kafue River 4 times Now settling on the eastern edge of Busanga Plains, prime lion habitat with abundant prey and plenty of company. With a satellite collar and geofence alerts via EarthRanger, he's under close watch by our team and aerial support unit. No Human-Wildlife Conflict incidents have been reported, and so far, no community alerts have been needed, he’s staying well within the park ecosystem. Kafue is now home to around 300 lions, and we’re hopeful this bold male will find his place among them Ariadne Van Zandbergen from kafuenationalparkzambia 2025.04.08
While exploring Kruger, we came across this emaciated lioness—her body weak, a cruel snare cutting deep into her neck. Every step looked painful. We spotted Honorary Rangers nearby and informed them. They phoned the vet team, who managed to fly in, dart her, and successfully remove the snare. She’s now free and recovering- finally getting a second chance at a healthy life. But amidst this moment of hope, we also witnessed the ugly side of tourism. A safari vehicle chased after her despite our efforts to block them. Desperate to give their guests a “good sighting,” they put profit over ethics, adding even more stress to an already suffering animal. This is NOT what conservation is about. Respect for wildlife must always come first.... — 在 Kruger National Park 。
The Gijima males were spotted not far from Bush Lodge, in the company of the Msuthlu Pride. They had brought down a Blue wildebeest in the night and after gorging themselves, they walked past us before lying down in the road. Scavengers were already in the area, with the lions only lifting their heads when a hyena approached. Vultures are often a reliable sign to follow when tracking predators like lions. These scavengers tend to shadow big cats, gathering near kill sites in anticipation. While lions feed, vultures keep their distance, patiently waiting for an opportunity. Once the lions move off or lose interest, the vultures swoop in to scavenge whatever small pieces remain. from Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve 2025.04.07
The Styx male and Kambula female seem to have settled into their newly formed young duo, spending time together as they navigate the early stages of partnership. On this occasion, they were found resting in a small open clearing, sheltering from the dreary weather. Not far off to the east, a herd of buffalo lay tucked into the woodlands. As the evening light faded and the wind shifted in their favour, the lions stirred—ready to hunt. Patience is a crucial part of any lion’s approach, especially when targeting such formidable prey. Despite their efforts, the ever-watchful buffalo caught glimpses and scents of the approaching predators, keeping just enough distance to stay safe. With the element of surprise lost, the lions eventually shifted their focus to covering ground and abandoned the hunt. from Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve 2025.04.07
This time, success, after searching for days, without stop. At daybreak, this morning early, I have managed to find Casper with one of his brothers. Back in his home grounds, back to the hang of the Lebemobo mountains, and the Nwanetsi. Can't wait to start sharing this very special sighting of the two old Shisangaan males. A special encounter. From the hang of the Lebombo mountains, to my way home, i have returned from arguably the best trip in the Kruger National Park that I have ever had. Searching for Casper, the mysterious white lion, for 6 days straight, to finally finding him yesterday, was a feeling of euphoria beyond any explanation....it was indeed, finding that needle in the haystack bigger than some countries..... Everything that happened in between, was nothing short of breathtaking. Having Casper all to yourself is something you don't often have, and here, I had that. A moment with two old Shishangaan lions, a trip down memory lane, as I reflected back to the day I first saw him, right here, back to his maternal origin grounds. I have so much to share, and will share as I start looking back at the hours and hours of footage I have returned with, and will upload.... For now, here is Casper, fresh from the Kruger Yesterday, and beautiful too...
We discovered fresh tracks of the Msuthlu Pride heading west into our reserve. The light drizzle in the early morning had left the tracks crisp and clear, making tracking much easier. Following the trail, we located the pride resting in an open area. It was evident they had enjoyed a meal overnight, as they appeared noticeably fuller than the day before. They will likely spend the day in the same area, only retreating into the treeline once the clouds clear and temperatures rise, allowing them to digest their food before moving on again. from Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve 2025.03.31
