A huge thanks to my Tanzanian guides who updated me on this heartbreaking case on 3 Feb 2025. This time, it was an intruder from the Tanzanian border who entered Kenya and poisoned the lions of Mara on 02 Feb 2025. Fortunately, he has been arrested and is in custody. But the damage is done—one male lion is confirmed dead, several lions and lionesses are suffering, and over 30 spotted hyenas have died from poisoning. This horrific act took place in the Sand River Area. Based on location details shared by my Tanzanian sources, I fear we have lost one of the Sopa Boys (Mandevu2 / Oldrop / Lentim / Lenchada). This is yet another tragic blow. Sadly, this isn’t new—Tanzanian herders have crossed into Kenya before and killed lions. The father of the current Sopa Boys suffered the same fate. I still remember I saw them as cubs back in 2021. It is truly disheartening to see people on social media attacking my cause and threatening more lions instead of addressing the real issue. For those blaming my efforts in seeking justice for Olobor as the reason behind Lorkulup’s death—that's absurd. I paid tribute to Olobor on 25-Feb-2025, but Lorkulup was already gone. Due to conflicts with certain individuals in Mara (you all know who), I’ve faced personal threats, and worse, someone dear to me has passed from the stress caused by these pressures. To those responsible—I am not done with you. I see people lashing out at well-known individuals in Mara, but why waste energy on "dead snakes"? Instead of verbal attacks, let’s channel our anger into meaningful action. What Really Happened? Lorkulup’s death on 25-Jan-2025, the same date as Olobor’s in 2024, is no coincidence. He was gone by early morning, while Olobor was brutally killed between 6:30 PM - 8:45 PM. Since March 2024, I’ve known of discussions about eliminating lions near villages, with increased illegal herding since Oct 2023. This isn’t speculation—tourists and locals witness illegal herding daily. This morning, Maasai guides confirmed: Illegal herding continues because herders fear no authority. The government won’t act—stopping herders risks election losses. The ruling body hides HWC cases to protect global reputation & foreign aid. I commend the brave guides standing up to expose Olobor and Lorkulup’s murders. This is the time to unite—if good people in Mara don’t act, the lions will vanish. The Nkuhlu brothers are a mighty sight - I was able to see 4 of the 5 brothers. They are big, they are strong, and they seem to be hanging around the southern parts of Mala Mala quite a bit. Two of the brothers did venture north and started to roar near the heart of Mala Mala, squarely in middle of the Ndhzenga males territory. The Ndhzenga males heard the Nkuhlu brothers and roared back - and the Nkuhlu males ran back to the south - pretty much with their tails between their legs. I would bet money that the brothers will continue to gain confidence and will challenge again. As you may know, we've been following the young white lioness with the tear in her face from the Birmingham Pride for the last few weeks. The Birmingham Pride gets seen on a few different concessions and it's not uncommon for different concessions to name the same lions different names. Therefor, we wanted to give her a name that the Latest Sightings community can use when tinging her and we hope you all love the name. After getting over 2,600 name suggestions sent in, we asked Jaun from @ngala_ways_safaris, who tinged the first sighting of the injury on the 15th of January to choose the most meaningful one out of those suggestions. We are extremely happy with his choice, and so, we would like to share it with you all. Nakinya Nakinya is a feminine Maasai name meaning 'the torn one! Originating from the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania. It stems from the verb akiny, meaning "tearing" (as in pulling off the bark of a tree or removing part of the skin), which leaves a scar. This is supported by the background of Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta, originally named by the Maasai 'enkinyata' which is a piece of skin obtained through the akiny process.
