新新人类:今年流行“毕婚族”( Wang Ni and Liu Hao, both 23 years old, got married last week, a month after they graduated from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. "We married for love," said Wang Ni. "We fell in love when we were juniors. Now we want our passion to continue." University students in major cities are increasingly choosing to get married soon after graduation. According to the Civil Affairs Department of Xuhui District, Shanghai, 1,221 university graduates aged 22 to 24 applied for marriage registration last year in the district, an increase of 50 percent over 2005.

4.house(房子)中的"ouse/aus/"与mouse(老鼠)中的"ouse /aus/"相同,两者可结合记忆。 5.dress(连衣裙)和 address(地址)具有相同的"dress/dres/"词素。 6.flower(花)及taking a shower中的"shower"都具有相同的"ower/au? /"。 7.inside, outside及sidewalk均有"side/said/"词素。 9.在pineapple(菠萝)词中含有apple(苹果)一词,方便记忆。 10.hand(手)+bag(提包)=handbag(手提包),可发现一些合成词的构词规律,记忆快速。 12.carrot(胡萝卜)和parrot(鹦鹉)中都含有arrot。 14.Chiken 倒过来读就是kitchen ,可编成 chant:go to the kitchen ,eat a chiken.
Canada to twin climate change policy with U.S., says official Canada will do exactly the same as the United States in its policy on cutting greenhouse gases despite international pressure for it to set tougher targets, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said Friday. Canada will follow U.S. President Barack Obama's lead at next week's Copenhagen climate summit, and will propose to do no more, no less, than its neighbor, Prentice said in a speech to a Montreal business audience Friday. He explained that Canada could not do more than the United States because it would "suffer economic pain for no real environmental gain" if it took a more aggressive approach. On the other hand, it would face punitive measures if it did less. "Given the integration of our two economies it is essential our targets remain in line -- not more, not less," Prentice said. "It all comes down to jobs." He brushed off critics of his government's positions on climate change, saying he would stick to his convictions despite international pressure at Copenhagen. The Conservative government gave up Canada's Kyoto commitments made under the former Liberal government and put forward a so-called "Made-in-Canada" plan on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020 from the 2006 level, which translates to only 2 percent reduction based on the 1990 level, a benchmark used by the Kyoto Protocol. The goal has been widely criticized as being too low, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also said previously that Canada's target is similar to that of the U.S. Obama administration and it has no plan to make any major adjustments as it goes to Copenhagen. With a mere population of 33 million, Canada stands seventh in the net volume of heat-trapping gases it emits every year. Canada's per capita emissions are the third highest in the world after Australia and the United States, according to World Wild life Fund Canada. In recent years, Canada's greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise with total emissions climbing 26 percent between1990 and 2006.
That we shall be late is certain. That the driver could not control his car was obvious. It is certain that we shall be late. It was obvious that the driver could not control his car. Is it true that he would take the risk? Is it possible that they will come tomorrow? It is clear that he was telling the truth. It’s probable that we’ll be a little late. 2、It + be + 名词词组 + that从句: It’s a pity that you can’t go with us. 3、It + 及物动词 + 宾语 + that从句: It worried her a bit that her hair was turning grey. It shocked me that Peter didn’t tell anybody where he was. 4、It + be + 过去分词 + that从句: It is said that he has been there many times. 5、It + seem/happen/appear等不及物动词 + that从句: It seems that he has lost something. It happened that I had no money with me that day. → I happened to have no money with me that day. 第二类,用连接代词who、whose、which、what,连接副词when、where、how、why,以及连词whether(或if)引导的主语从句,例如: Who was responsible for the accident is not yet clear. → It is not yet clear who was responsible for the accident. What he did is not yet known. → It is not yet known what he did. Whether it is true remains a problem. → It remains a problem whether / if it is true. 第三类,用what、whatever、where、wherever、whoever、whichever等代词引导的主语从句,例如:
6). But, or, otherwise 等含蓄条件句的用法. 7). It’s time (that) 等结构中虚拟语气的用法. 1. 条件从句 主句 动词过去式(be多用were) Would/should/could/might + 动词原形 Eg. If I were a bird, I would fly to you. If it were not for their help, we should be in a very difficult position. 条件从句 主句 had + 过去分词 would/should/could/might + have +过去分词 Eg. If we had started earlier, we should not have missed the train. If she hadn’t been ill, she might have come. 条件从句 主句 动词过去式或should +动词原形或were to +动词原形 would/should/could/might +动词原形 Eg. If Professor Li should have time tomorrow, we could ask him some questions. If there should be no air, there would be no living things. Eg. Were he in your position, he’d have done the same. Had I had time, I would have done that yesterday. Should he come tomorrow, I should give him the dictionary. P 116, 2 Eg. If I were you, I would have taken his advice. (从句指现在, 主句指过去) If I had taken my raincoat with me this morning, I would not be wet now. Eg. But for your advice, I could not have done it so successfully. The change could not have taken place without the open-door policy.
1. Never Get Obsessed with your Appearance. We think you look great (though some of the outfits you wear worry us!). You look fine. 2. Some girls get depressed, blame themselves and lose self-esteem. All sorts of problems can follow.

中西文化差异(英文版) It is also appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed. Children should always address adults in the formal fashion, using their title and last name. Another difference is about the form of addressing. From the viewpoint of sociolinguistics, forms of addressing can serve as an indication of the relationship of power and solidarity in the society. In calling their superiors or elders, the Chinese are accustomed to the nonreciprocal or asymmetrical addressing, in other words. They use “title +surname” to address their superior or elders rather than call them surnames, while the superior or elders call the addressers their names. The Chinese tend to abide by the polite principle of depreciating oneself and respecting others to show appropriate respects towards the persons being addressed, otherwise, the addresser may be considered as ill mannered, ill educated or rude. But in English speaking countries, people have a tendency to follow the reciprocal or symmetrical addressing. Although they are different in age and status, they can call the other directly, namely, their names, even first names except when they call the doctors, not arousing offence between them, but demonstrating the sense of intimacy and the conception of” Everyone is created equal” . Chinese people feel unnatural addressing a westerner by his given name, feeling that it indicates too close a relationship, and westerners, on the other hand, may feel that if a Chinese insists on using his surname, it indicates an unwillingness to be friendly and maintains a gap between them. So the use of forms like” Miss Mary” or “Mr. Smith ” may be a Chinese forms of compromise. With Miss Mary, the use of the given name indicates friendliness, but the addition of the title indicates the respect they feel they ought to show. And with Smith, the lack of a title indicates friendliness, but the use of the surname prevents if sounding too intimate. However, both addressing used by the Chinese sound very strange and uncomfortable to the westerner. 3.Compliments and ResponseTo compliment is to praise the addressee’s virtues, ability, behavior, appearance, clothing, personality and belongs. Appropriate compliments can serve as effective supplementary means in inter-personal communication. Western and Chinese culture are at polar opposites about compliment. An western hostess, if she is complimented for her cooking skill, is likely to say,” Oh, I am so glad that you liked it. I cook it especially for you.” Not so is a Chinese hostess, who will instead apologize for giving you “Nothing”. They will say“随便作几个菜,不好吃 。”If translate this into English“I just made some dishes casually and they are not very tasty. Perhaps the foreigner will think why you invite me to you family and have the untasty food. You aren't respect me. The English-speaking people are more active to praise others and to be praise than Chinese people. For example, the Americans are “straight forwardness”, the Chinese take pride in “modesty”. That modesty has left many a Chinese hungry at an Americans table, for Chinese politeness calls for three refusals before one accepts an offer and the Americans hosts take ”no ” to mean “no ”, whether it is the first, second or third time. Still bigger differences exist in people’s attitude towards compliments, i.e., in the response to compliments. Chinese are tend to efface themselves in words or refuse it, although they do feel comfortable about the compliments . So many westerners simply feel puzzled or even upset when their Chinese friends refused their compliments. The Chinese people are not intending to be modest with the sacrifice of friendship in so doing, but it is rather due to the traditional Chinese philosophy, that of modesty. The Chinese people regard modesty as a most valuable virtue, so they seldom agree to the compliment on their own.

Crashing a state dinner at the White House apparently takes a security breakdown as well as some kind of nerve. The Secret Service is looking into its own security procedures after determining that a Virginia couple, Michaele and Tareq Salahi, managed to slip into Tuesday night's state dinner at the White House even though they were not on the guest list, agency spokesman Ed Donovan said. President Barack Obama was never in any danger because the party crashers went through the same security screening for weapons as the 300-plus people actually invited to the dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Donovan said. The Salahis are well-known in the Virginia horse-country set and were being considered for the Bravo reality TV show Real Housewives of DC. In an interview with the CBS Early Show in September, Michaele Salahi said, "President Obama has made it very accessible for anyone to visit the White House, so that's like a big thing right now." The Secret Service learned about the security breach on Wednesday after a media inquiry prompted by the Salahis' online boasts about having attended the private event, Donovan said. One of the many photos from the dinner posted on Michaele Salahi's Facebook page shows the couple with a smiling Vice President Joe Biden. In other photos, they appear alone or together with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty, CBS News anchor Katie Couric and three Marines in their dress blues. The Washington Post said uninvited guests who got in could face a potential trespassing charge unless someone from inside the White House staff slipped them in. Donovan would not comment on possible legal violations. "It's important to note that they went through all the security screenings - the magnetometer screening - just like all the other guests did," Donovan said. And, he added, Obama and others under Secret Service protection had their usual security details with them at the dinner.
Speak up: study shows stifling anger at work can kill Men who bottle up their anger at being unfairly treated at work are up to five times more likely to suffer a heart attack, or even die from one, than those who let their frustration show, a Swedish study has found. The study by the Stress Research Institute of Stockholm University followed 2,755 employed men who had not suffered any heart attacks from 1992 to 2003. At the end of the study, 47 participants had either suffered an attack, or died from heart disease, and many of those had been found to be "covertly coping" with unfair treatment at work. "After adjustment for age, socioeconomic factors, risk behaviors, job strain and biological risk factors at baseline, there was a close-response relationship between covert coping and the risk of incident myocardial infarction or cardiac death," the study's authors wrote. Covert coping was listed as "letting thing pass without saying anything" and "going away" despite feelings of being hard done by colleagues or bosses. Men who often used these coping techniques had a two to fivefold higher risk of developing heart disease than those who were more confrontational at work, the study showed. The researchers said they could not answer the question of what might be a particularly healthy coping strategy at work, but listed open coping behavior when experiencing unfair treatment or facing a conflict as "protesting directly," "talking to the person right away," "yelling at the person right away" or "speaking to the person later when things have calmed down." The study was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
London's Big Ben clocks up 150 years London's Big Ben celebrates the 150th anniversary of its first chiming on Saturday. The Great Bell, housed in Saint Stephen's Tower which adjoins the House of Commons, first struck the hour on July 11, 1859, and has been interrupted only occasionally for maintenance and bad weather ever since.Mike McCann, Keeper of the Great Clock, said: "After 150 years, Big Ben still holds a special place in the hearts of Londoners and the world as a magnificent example of engineering and building genius." The 96-metre (315-foot) high tower which houses the clock was built as part of the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin following a major fire in 1843.

Russia to price gas supplies to Ukraine at European levels Russia will price its gas supplies to Ukraine in line with European levels at an average 280 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic meters in 2010, the Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Wednesday. "The average price for next year will be about 280 dollars, which is in line with European levels," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov told Ekho Moskvy radio station. The spokesman said the recent cooperation between Russia and Ukraine went smoothly, with no abnormalities concerning payment issue. He also excluded the existence of objective factors that might trigger another gas crisis on the eve of the new year. Gazprom and its Ukrainian counterpart Naftogaz on Tuesday agreed that Russian gas supplies to Ukraine would be cut by 35 percent in 2010, from 52 billion cubic meters to 33.75 billion cubic meters. After holding talks on Nov. 19, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko agreed to revise some articles in the gas contract they signed in January. One of the revised articles would prevent Naftogaz from being fined for taking less gas than required by the contract in 2009. Russia supplies a quarter of EU's gas needs, with 80 percent of it pumped through Ukrainian pipelines. The energy supplier cut off gas deliveries to Ukraine for nearly two weeks in January, leaving tens of thousands of Europeans without heating gas in the depths of winter
