WelcomeThe Department of Comparative Literature welcomes students interested in the study of more than one national literature, and those intrigued by the more general questions literature and literary study have prompted through the centuries. Though students at all levels focus on at least one language and literature in addition to English, comparative study is hardly limited to direct comparisons between authors or even literatures. Through the wider perspective offered by an inquiry into literatures across national, and often across disciplinary borders, a fuller understanding of literature and literary criticism - their forms and traditions as well as their larger cultural implications - may be obtained. Students motivated by a desire to understand literature in the broadest terms, as well as those interested in particular examples of literary comparison, will find an intellectual home in the Department of Comparative Literature.
