Development efforts based on a design which sought to create a 5-speed transmission by adding an additional gear to a 4-speed gearbox, which was already the result of adding an additional gear to a conventional 3-speed transmission, ran into cost and weight problems. Aisin AW addressed these issues by reevaluating automatic transmission design from the bottom up and launching a development project aimed at creating a completely new 6-speed automatic transmission.
