The A1 prototype, A1 for Aluminium N°1, is the first 110 prototype (the project code is 035), used for the development of the future Bugatti supercar, in duo with the A2 car. The car is sent to Turin for wind tunnel testing in mid august 1990, dressed with the Gandini angular body styling, finished in silver and strangely numbered 110-0000.
Once back on August 23 1990, the “shake-down” follows; the first steps the car takes on its own, on the track within the walls of the Campogalliano complex. A few days later, the first test rides are held on the Michelin track in Ladoux, France. During the official inauguration of the plant on September 15, the A1 is under a cloth in the presentation room.
The first test run of the A1 in Italy occurs on the Monza track on Monday January 14th, 1991. Pavel Rajmis, responsible for the car's development, and the two test drivers Bicocchi and Vittecoq, are present. Vittecoq, now self-employed, works full-time for Bugatti. After the decision to perform the development on only 1 of the 2 cars, the choice fell on A2. Therefore, the A1 car was then dismantled and ceased to exist.
The chassis 110-0000 was reused in 1991 for an assymetric styling study, without any mechanical parts.
The A1 study still exist and is stored in the Netherlands.
