ENLIGNTMENT:a philosophical movement of the 18th century,particular in france but effectively over much of europe and america.the enlightment celebrated reason science,and human beings' ability to perfect themselves and their society.NEW ENGLAND RENAISSANCE:during romantic period in american literature,the major writerslike emerson,thoreau,melville,and most of the "fireside school"were from New England and New England has became the center of literary creation,with Transcendentalism as the most influential trend.Thus critics call this period of literary flourishment in New England the New England Renaissance.SCHOOLROOM POETS:it refer s to longfellow,Lowell,Hlomes,and Whittier who wrote familiar poems.for the common reader and interpreted the aspirations of the age to their countrymen and brought honor to the nation by achieving international fame.GOTHIC ROMANCE: it refers to the Romance novels with settings of the ancient castles or old houses and description of supernatural elements like ghosts and specters,usually horror-provoking,like Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and some of Irving's tales.PLOT: plot can be defined as the author's dramatic manipulation of the events of his tale for the maximum artistic effect.STYLE:style is the revelation of the individuality,whether of an artist,a period,a place,or a genre.the style is understood to mean the way in which writers assemble words to tell the story,develop the argument,dramatize the play,or compose the poem.STANZA:a group of verse lines forming a section of a poem and sharing the same structure as all or some of the other sections of the same poems,in terms of the lengths of its lines,its meter,and usually its rhyme scheme.in printed poems,stanzas are separated by spaces.FOOT:a rhythmic unit,a specific combination of stressed and unstressed syllables is called a foot.the common kinds of feet in english poetry are iamb,trochee,anapest,dacty and spondee.EYE RHYME:it is formed by words that look like a rhymed unit but do not have the same sounds.for example,home and some,hear and bear.END RHYME:if the both rhyming words occur at the ends of the lines,it is called end rhyme.TROCHEE,TROCHAIC:a kind of metrical foot.a trochee is a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one
