Well, I don't think mother will care so much about such relation between the guy and this pretty girl, she was suppose to feel happy. the edition I read is that the wife felt quite uncertain about her husband, because he lived in another place near his office. considering cost, he shared the room with his secretary, which made the wife very unhappy. so she went to the apartment, and then you know what happened.
