A MESSEAGE FROM DANIEL RADCLIFFE A MESSEAGE FROM DANIEL RADCLIFFE JULY 2004-07-28 A huge 'thank you' to everyone who sent me birthday wishes and gifts to celebrate my fifteen birthday. It was a very special day, made all the more special by the thousands of cards and messages I received from all over the world. I want to say a special 'thank you' to everyone who contributed to the Demelza House appeal. This is a hugely important place to me and I value the support that each and every person gives to it. This hospice receives no government funding so every contribution, however small, counts! Filming on GOBLET OF FIRE is going very well. I spent a month in a tank filming the underwater task and I did think really was going to sprout gills!! It is going to be a spectacular sequence! I have already worked with some of the new actors- Brendan Gleeson and Miranda Richardson and they are all fantastic. As arethe actors playing Cedric, Fleur, Cho, and Krum – Robert Pattinson , Clemence Poesy, Katie leung and Stanislav Ianevski. The band I am completely obessed with at the moment is Razorlight and their new album UP ALL NIGHT – it is sensational. I also love Modest Mouse, The Bees and The Killers. I am also listening to a lot of music by the Kinks, a famous band from the 60's, and I love their music. I finally saw SPIDERMAN 2 and loved it! I have recently been rewatching a lot of my favourite films THE GODFATHER, PLATOON, GATTACA, and STAND BY ME. I love these films. ]By the time you receive this letter I will have had a short holiday in Europe which I am really looking forward to. It was been a hectic few months so I am really excited about having a few days off, before I start filming again. Wherever you are in the world I hope you are having a fabulous summer. Thank you for your continued support. Danial

I really doubt whether you actually know much about spoken English , or rather, phonetics though you sound to be an expert in English Language. I've got a Master's degree in Linguistics(concentration: English Language) & I'm sure I know English phonology much better than you do. First of all, I'd like to let you know that there're a good variety of "streams" of English around the globe, among which the UK English & the US English are the two most important ones. Definitely, there're so-called the "standard" UK English & the "standard" US English. As far as the "standard" spoken UK English is concerned, "RP" accent (or the BBC accent which we prefer to call nowadays) is commonly spoken by the educated native speakers of English in southern England. It's regarded to be the standard pronunciation of the people who're well-educated & are in higher social classes in the English society. However, "RP" accent is not widely used outside southern England. Besides, there exist many variants in pronunciation in the real living English "world". In a nutshell, even the native-speakers of English in the same country (or, even in the same city) do pronounce the same word(s) differently. Sometimes, the variants occur with the vowels/dipthongs, or the syllable on which the native-speakers put the primary/secondary stress. Sometimes, the variants occur with the consonants. Besides, the speed at which the speaker is talking also affects his/her pronunications. For example, native speakers of English usually put a secondary stress on the last syllable of the word "important" when they speak slowly. However, they, almost certainly, never stress the last syllable when they say it very quickly, which makes "important" sound like a two-syllable word. In addition, it's always difficult (or even impossible) to differentiate between "voiceless" & "voiced" consonants in daily living English conversations. (i.e. the "s" & "z" you were talking about). It's undoubtedly ridiculous to challenge people's pronounications in the way you did, except in purely academic courses in English phonology, plus a strictly controlled oral/aural language laboratory. Last but not least, I'd like to emphasize that I (or we, our dear Leon's fans) love Leon neither because of his fame or fortune, nor his ability to speak standard "Putonghua"/Mandarin or English,

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 59 Chinese "MY dear Lizzy, where can you have been walking to?" was a question which Elizabeth received from Jane as soon as she entered their room, and from all the others when they sat down to table. She had only to say in reply, that they had wandered about, till she was beyond her own knowledge. She coloured as she spoke; but neither that, nor any thing else, awakened a suspicion of the truth. The evening passed quietly, unmarked by any thing extraordinary. The acknowledged lovers talked and laughed, the unacknowledged were silent. Darcy was not of a disposition in which happiness overflows in mirth; and Elizabeth, agitated and confused, rather knew that she was happy than felt herself to be so; for, besides the immediate embarrassment, there were other evils before her. She anticipated what would be felt in the family when her situation became known; she was aware that no one liked him but Jane; and even feared that with the others it was a dislike which not all his fortune and consequence might do away. At night she opened her heart to Jane. Though suspicion was very far from Miss Bennet's general habits, she was absolutely incredulous here. "You are joking, Lizzy. This cannot be! -- engaged to Mr. Darcy! No, no, you shall not deceive me. I know it to be impossible." "This is a wretched beginning indeed! My sole dependence was on you; and I am sure nobody else will believe me, if you do not. Yet, indeed, I am in earnest. I speak nothing but the truth. He still loves me, and we are engaged." Jane looked at her doubtingly. "Oh, Lizzy! it cannot be. I know how much you dislike him." "You know nothing of the matter. That is all to be forgot. Perhaps I did not always love him so well as I do now. But in such cases as these, a good memory is unpardonable. This is the last time I shall ever remember it myself." Miss Bennet still looked all amazement. Elizabeth again, and more seriously assured her of its truth. "Good Heaven! can it be really so! Yet now I must believe you," cried Jane. "My dear, dear Lizzy, I would -- I do congratulate you -- but are you certain? forgive the question -- are you quite certain that you can be happy with him?" "There can be no doubt of that. It is settled between us already, that we are to be the happiest couple in the world. But are you pleased, Jane? Shall you like to have such a brother?" "Very, very much. Nothing could give either Bingley or myself more delight. But we considered it, we talked of it as impossible. And do you really love him quite well enough? Oh, Lizzy! do any thing rather than marry without affection. Are you quite sure that you feel what you ought to do?" "Oh, yes! You will only think I feel more than I ought to do, when I tell you all." "What do you mean?" "Why, I must confess that I love him better than I do Bingley. I am afraid you will be angry." "My dearest sister, now be serious. I want to talk very seriously. Let me know every thing that I am to know, without delay. Will you tell me how long you have loved him?"
