Nicholas the Tsar "What am I going to do? What is going to happen to me, to all of Russia? I am not prepared to be a Tsar. I have never wanted to become one. I know nothing of the business of Ruling." - Nicholas II Romanov Tsar Nicholas II ruled the Russian empire from 1894, when his father, Alexander III, suddenly died of Nephritis; until 1917, when he abdicated his throne, ultimately in favor of a provisional government. Russia was in a vulnerable state when the Great War broke out in June, 1914. The country was still recovering from the embarrassing defeat of the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905), which put in motion a set of events leading to what is now called the 1905 revolution. The cost of the war was devastating to the country; the loss of life was catastrophic. Different sources indicate somewhere between 900 000 and 2 500 000 soldiers were killed in action, while between 1.5 000 000 and 5 Million were wounded. There are reports of about 800 000 Russian soldiers held as POW's. The country spent a record 8 Billion rubles on the war effort; equivalent to almost 250 000 000 US dollars. The Tsar did receive warning about what war could mean for Russia. One of these warnings came in the form of a letter to Tsarina Alexandra from the families confidant, Gregory Rasputin. Nicholas tore it up. The Tsar, a naive and incompetent leader by almost all reported accounts, took control of the Russian military and spent most of his time at army headquarters, leaving his wife, Alexandra, in charge of day to day operations in the country. Heavy economic and military losses, clear incompetent leadership, and the civil unrest that had been brewing for years all came together to force the 1917 Russian Revolution. In March of 1917, Nicholas abdicated his throne; first in favor of his brother, then in favor of a provisional government. The Tsar and his family were placed under house arrest. When the Bolsheviks took control of Russia, things changed. On July 17, 1918, shortly after midnight; the Tsar, his wife Alexandra, their children Anastasia (17), Maria (19), Tatiana (21), Olga (22) and Alexi (13), their doctor and some servants, were shot to death in the cellar of the Impatiev house, located at Yekaterinburg, Russia.
