For example, folk/pop artist Marit Larsen is currently a rising star in Norway, with her debut album Under the Surface going platinum in just a few months following its release, and Marit winning a Spellemannprisen (Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Female Artist. (Maritlarsen.com) Her album continues to sell well not only in terms of CD sales, but also in sales on the Norwegian branch of the iTunes store. But despite her massive popularity in her home country of Norway, it is not possible to buy any of her music in the U.S. iTunes store because it is “out of the region” of a Norwegian based artist. Potential iTunes customers are robbed of the opportunity to purchase music like Marit’s that are popular in other countries, but are deemed not within the right “area” for people to purchase said music. Customer’s world-wide should have the same opportunities to access the same content that their neighbors in other countries are able to access, regardless of language or location. This would serve to not only give customers equal footing in terms of where they stand as customers, but also give every iTunes Store user a chance to have the same opportunity that a user from a different country has.

[marit]Stylus杂志上MARIT的采访 most Americans have probably heard Marit Larsen’s voice before. She was one-half of the teenage pop duo M2M, whose “Don’t Say You Love Me” was a minor-hit stateside (helped, no doubt, by its inclusion on the Pokemon: The First Movie soundtrack). After the break-up, and years out of the spotlight, Larsen emerged with 2006’s stunning Under the Surface, a record that received both overwhelming critical acclaim and massive sales in her native country and throughout Western Europe. Far from flirtatious teenage love songs and digitally enhanced bubblegum, Larsen has a knack, thanks to her pixie-ish range somewhere between Gillian Welch and Bjork, for crafting saccharine sweet melodies. Under the Surface boils over with rich and sophisticated pop music; a cohesive document spotted with country accents as on the banjo led “Only a Fool” and soaring piano hooks, found on her biggest hit, “Don’t Save Me,” that could translate in any corner of the world. Stylus caught up with Larsen at the South By Southwest Festival to talk to her about Under the Surface, its possible release in the States, and the next album. First of all, why are you here playing South By Southwest? Basically, I’m looking for a label. My record is a really weird pop album and I’m hoping to find someone here that is enthusiastic about my music and doesn’t have enormous ambitions sales-wise. I just want it to be available. Not to bring up M2M that much, but I wanted to talk about the period where M2M broke up and you decided to become a solo artist. Were you always writing your own songs? I was always writing my own songs. I started writing when I was thirteen, and I’ve always been writing my own songs just for myself. It’s my way of getting things out of my system. I just never had the courage to share the ones that I wrote all by myself. So M2M was mostly… We co-wrote all of that, but when you have two names on a song you can never tell who owns the story. You and Marion? Yes, so we co-wrote them, and we wrote with a lot of different people. I mean, we traveled the world for two years and wrote with like 50 different co-writers. It was a good learning experience, but I learned mostly what I don’t want, which is important as well. Do you find yourself regretting your time in M2M at all? No, not at all. I play a country version of “Don’t Say You Love Me” but that’s basically it, and that’s a song that I’ve always held close to my heart. But even then, I’ve always had my own songs, and some of the songs on Under the Surface, like “Solid Ground” I started writing when I was 14. You were talking about what you didn’t want to do as a solo artist, what did you learn the most from being in M2M that has carried over to now? I think the most important thing I learned is that when you’re standing on that stage and you’re so alone and so naked, it doesn’t matter that the producer was so stubborn or the record company wanted it to be this way or that way, because all the audience sees is you. They’re going think that it’s your opinion, your choices in melodies, and if it sucks it sucks. People won’t buy it.

【MARIT日记--31.07.2006】 Dear All.I just came home from Paris where I've had five wonderful days with a friend of mine. We decided to go last minute, as I didn't stop working as long as I stayed at home for my vacation. I found peace. We ate lovely meals, enjoyed the fantastic weather (it was almost a bit too hot for us Norwegian girls) and the beautiful city and had a great time.I spent a whole afternoon in the nicest bookstore I have ever been to, Shakespeare and Company, where there are thousands of books from floor to ceiling, old and new. You can hang around and read as long as you want to, and frankly, you don't ever want to leave, because of the magical atmosphere. I also found some really nice dresses and a beautiful secondhand purse. Of course there was also an hour or two spent at the huge Virgin Megastore at Champs Elysées... I discovered some great French music. And found some records on vinyl that I've wanted for a long time.Three more days before I get back on the road. We had a great time, with good food and christmas music. My dad bought the biggest three ever, 2.70 meters!! In addition, the chorus is just right. Radio stations can all make space for it right away. On Tuesday the single will be in the stores. The album ‘Under the surface’ is released on the 6th of March. If the rest of the songs are of the same calibre as this, 2006 might be Marit Larsens year. ‘Don’t save me’ is more than yet another catchy song with a youthful freshness. The opening immediately brings associations to ABBA; simple, tasty chords that grab a hold of you. There is magic in the art of switching between the major and the 7th, as it’s done here. If you are to create a hit, there has to happen something in the first two or tree seconds. Bjørn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (of ABBA fame) knew what they were doing when they wrote the intro to ‘Waterloo’. And yes, it sounds like they have been involved on this production too. They have not. The song is produced by Marit herself in cooperation with Kåre Vestrheim and Mike Hartung, the gentlemen behind the great sound of Odd Nordstogas ‘Luring’-album. The final result is an airy and at the same times focused soundscape and lovely instrumentation with keys, guitar, harmonica and clapping of hands. Vocally, Marit Larsen has some of the recklessness and rustic of Alanis Morissette about her, but she also has some of her young girl charm intact. After the split of M2M in the summer of 2002, Marit has mostly been away from the public scene. Meanwhile she has been working on an album , and the expectations have been high. On the cd-cover she is pictured, for some reason, as a Lolita with cast down eyes. That is not necessary. ‘Don’t save me’ promises well for the little queen of Sørlie Terrasse. - Michael
