Urban bares it all for Playgirl magazine, posing nude with only a strategically placed guitar over his crotch. The Today show calls him a "country hottie," and reporter Jill Rappaport tells him he's the "male version of Faith Hill." Urban responds, "I hope my girlfriend doesn't look like [Hill's husband] Tim McGraw."


Decent Proposal
Eating dinner with girlfriend Laura Sigler at Nashville's Café OneTwoThree, Urban has a man stand outside with a sign reading "Will you marry me?" She accepts, but the pair never makes it to the altar, splitting the following year.


2002
Paving His Path to Stardom
With the release of his second album, Golden Road, Urban establishes himself as a bona fide star in Nashville. The record hits No. 11 on the overall Billboard charts and gives him three No. 1 country singles ("Somebody Like You," "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me?" and "You'll Think of Me").


2004
Here and Now
Urban crosses over to mainstream audiences with Be Here, which peaks at No. 3 on the Billboard albums chart. Twelve years after landing in Nashville, Urban launches his first headlining tour. Of the tour, he tells PEOPLE, "We're on buses versus crammed into a van, and people are showing up versus not showing up. And they know your songs!"
Top Honors
Minutes after performing his chart-topping single "Days Go By," Urban wins Male Vocalist of the Year at the Country Music Awards in Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House. "I am so dumbfounded, I don't know what to say," he tells the crowd. "I am so glad my mom and dad are here tonight. I thank Nashville for letting me come and make music because it's all I ever wanted to do." He'll win the award for the next two years as well as Entertainer of the Year in 2005.


2005
Eyes Wide Open
In L.A. for a dinner honoring famous Australians, Urban meets actress Nicole Kidman. The pair are first spotted spending time together in July, and Kidman becomes a mainstay on his Urban's Alive in '05 tour. By November Kidman is spotted wearing a sparkling ring on her finger as the two – who won't comment on the relationship – prepare to host Thanksgiving at his Nashville home with both sets of parents in attendance.

Winner's Circle
Sitting in the front row with Kidman at the Grammy Awards – their first major event as a couple – Urban wins the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Country Performance for "You'll Think of Me."

In an all-candlelight ceremony just after sundown, Urban and Kidman wed at Sydney, Australia's Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel on St. Patrick's Estate at Manly. Guests at the black-tie event include Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts and Rupert Murdoch, while Kidman's sister Antonia and Urban's brother Shane serve as maid of honor and best man. "It was the most emotional and beautiful ceremony," a guest tells PEOPLE. "Nicole looks ethereal with her veil floating, like a vision in white. Keith cried when he looked at her."
A Sobering Decision
With Kidman at his side, Urban admits himself into rehab. "One can never let one's guard down in recovery," he says in a written statement. "And I'm afraid I have." "He's a strong and amazing person," Urban's friend Anastasia Brown tells PEOPLE. "So he's dealing with this challenge just as he does with everything in life – with grace, strength and integrity." In January, he is released from rehab and returns to Kidman.

Urban's latest album, Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing is released and the song "Once in a Lifetime" is nominated for a Grammy. Another track, "Got It Right This Time," features the following lyrics, presumably about Kidman: "She believes in me like I've been tryin' to do/I'm seein' things I've never seen before/Ever since she came into my life I've been a better man/Yeah, after all the crazy days I made it through."

Urban: "I Was Going to Lose it All"
As he begins another leg of his U.S. tour and releases his first greatest hits album, Urban opens up to PEOPLE about his road back after rehab and the devotion of his wife. "Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do," he says of Kidman who stuck by his side. "To see that kind of love in action, that's very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man." In the new year, Kidman's rep announces that the couple is expecting their first child together

Nicole & Keith Welcome Sunday
After years of struggling to have a baby, Kidman gives birth to her and Urban's first child together, a daughter they name Sunday Rose. "We feel immensely blessed and grateful to be given this beautiful baby girl," the couple says in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. "She's an absolute delight."

Gotta Have 'Faith'
Urban and Kidman welcome their second daughter together, Faith Margaret, via surrogate. "Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret," the couple says in a statement. "No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier."
