《2002》的这个片名，乍看之下似乎没有多少意思，通常都会把它认为是年份，因为明年就是2002年了，但实际的情况却完全不是这样。在粤语里，二的发音更象是一，2002因此是“异灵灵异”的谐音。由这个名字便不难看出，影片中会有鬼怪、灵异出现。不知是不是考虑要在圣诞上映，因此，“异灵灵异”这样有些邪气的名字便被改做了“2002”。 　　当然原因在不仅仅在于此，本片的名字更多地是根据影片中出现的一个特殊部门的称呼而来。警察局里的部门本来是各负其责办理不同类型的案件的，民事、刑事都各自分开，但之前却没有一个专门负责鬼怪案件的部门。在片中虚构的警察局里，有2002这样一个特殊的部门，这个部门专门以一人一鬼的组合来对付为祸人间的鬼魂。本片的故事也主要是讲述2002的组员如何对付恶鬼，因此片名也就叫做《2002》。
