Fantastic performance from Qinwen, now her third straight set win and dismissing Ostapenko and Kasatkina in straight sets. It was an imperious and powerful display, dominating Dasha in the rallies and treating her serve with contempt. Qinwen's high level continued into the second set, so Dasha had to fight back to stay in the match as there were no Jil Teichmann style freebies on offer today. Dasha fought very well to stay in the match and there were some great rallies between them in the last few games, but it was too little, too late.
Altogether, a wonderful statement performance from the hugely talented Qinwen, this is the sort of event where you can see her making a move towards the top 20 starting right now. PS well done on the special exempt for Doha!

What a statement performance from Zheng, displaying her power and all court game. The work on her return is clearly paying off, there was perhaps only a handful of poor ROS errors from Zheng throughout the entire match (and I think this was due to smart shot selection as opposed to her simply having a good day).
Kasatkina's tactic of playing higher balls didn't work against Zheng who is like 1.78m compared to Teichmann's 1.7. Giving Zheng time on the ball is suicide, much better to rush her or keep the ball low outside of her strike zone.
Kasatkina started in the first set playing really negative and defensive, hitting few winners but somehow a ton of unforced errors (I think even more than Zheng). Played more aggressive in the second set but Zheng's movement and defence handled it well (also seemed to hit either an ace or winner on every BP).

Qinwen was very impressive, the cleanest match I've seen her play start to finish. I wasn't sure how she'd deal with high balls and being dragged into unfamiliar positions - superbly was the answer today. I've actually not seen her play on clay, but her game today looked very conducive to it. If she can bottle this form, she'll be a force for years ahead. Don't know about her celebrations in Dasha's direction though... I think I'll enjoy watching her lose more from now on.
Dasha looks really short on confidence right now. She was trying things, but couldn't execute, particularly on the big points. Her UE count was higher than Qinwen's, which was crazy to see for this matchup. She's been having huge problems controlling her depth recently, particularly early on in matches which has been leading to lots of slow starts (and no-starts). There's already been as many bad losses this year as just about all last season; it's been a significant drop in form. Weak serving, passiveness, poor under pressure... the same old problems aren't getting better right now. Not sure what's needed right now to build her confidence back up, some red dirt under her feet might help.

Unfortunately, we're stuck with her in the top10/20 for a while, especially since she got all those free points at YEC (plus a win over Gauff in what had to be the worst match in YEC history).
