Shane went home with Kian that day. This school needed you to stay in it overnight whether you lived near or far, but all of the students were packing the first day.‘Shaney, what do you think of our new class?’ Kian asked on their way.‘Oh, just so so. What’s your point?’‘Nah, I only thought beautiful girls were less than before.’ Kian laughed lightly. ‘That Daisy Moore’s okay, isn’t she?’‘What?’ Shane couldn’t believe his ears. ‘Ki, you speaking of Daisy Moore! How can she compared with you mate? I thought you were joking?’‘Of course I’m not, Shane mate.’ Kian eyed Shane seriously. ‘I found you interested in your deskmate?’‘No,’ Shane answered with hesitation. ‘But Daisy Moore…’‘People don’t understand her,’ Kian stared into the sky.‘What do you mean?’‘She… she has a disease, it’s very serious and it could kill. She never told anybody, she’s strong enough, you see. And you can’t expect she’s that outgoing.’ Kian said flatly.Shane gasped, and then fell silent. After a while he asked, ‘how are the heck do you know?’‘Heard through a friend.’ Kian said simply.‘Well, I’m sorry, Ki,’ Shane patted him on the shoulders.‘It’s okay,’ Kian took Shane’s hand. ‘I’d better hurry up packing, it’s getting dark.’The next morning Shane got up on time and had his timetable sent from Professor Spencer. There was no doubt that Professor Spencer was their Head of the Class, and Shane’s favorite subject, maths, was taught by a funny old man Professor Linstring, chemistry teacher was a pumpy little woman named Professor Rogers. Biology, geography and history were staying the same as before, they were taught by Professor Williams, Professor Rice and Professor Sinistra. Their English teacher was a beautiful young lady, her name was Felicity Ninas. But she was also a bit stupid, so English lesson soon became the best time and place to have private chat.Shane always sat between Mandy and Kian in the last row, as Daisy Moore sitting on the other side with Kian. Mandy was very clever, but one shame she’s dreadful at maths, which happened to be the best subject of Shane’s.‘Shane, I forgot radical 2 again!...’ Mandy cried during an exam.Shane fainted on the table.‘For the last time, 1.41421!’ Shane muttered back.‘You two stop hissing, will you? This is an exam!’ To Mandy and Shane’s surprise, the boy sitting in front of them suddenly turned around and said to them angrily.‘Like you know everything, yeah, I just can’t remember these stuff, radical 2, radical 3…’ Mandy glanced at him and back at her exam paper.Both the boy and Shane couldn’t help to laugh.When the exam was over, the boy turned his head again. ‘Hello guys, I’m Mark Feehily.’‘I’m Shane Filan.’ Shane shook hands with Mark.‘Mandy Weasley.’ Mandy smiled broadly towards him.Shane watched Mark smile back, but didn’t say anything. ‘Hey Shane, I’m going to the library. Coming?’ Kian waved at his and picked his bag.‘Yeah,’ Shane put his math book into his bag.‘What about Mae?’ Kian dropped his voice.

‘Right, I’m coming,’ unfortunately Mandy heard him, raised her eyebrows and went out of the classroom. Mark hesitated, stepped out and followed. Shane and Kian went out together, but outside the classroom, Kian went for a different way.‘Where are you going?’ Shane asked.‘Getting Daisy,’ Kian grinned.‘Oh,’ Shane bowed his head and quickly walked away. He entered the library quite alone and spotted Mandy on the back of it. He seated himself across from her, sat down and took his books out. Mandy was busy scribbling her biology essay, a large and heavy book opening in front of her. Mark was searching for some books between Row 9 and Row 10.Shane looked down and wrote a few words on his essay, soon realised that he wrote his title wrong. He put down his pen angrily and looked ahead. Mandy’s graceful figure caught his eyes completely, he stared at her from far away until he felt Kian’s hand was on his shoulder. He looked up.‘I said you’re interested in your deskmate,’ Kian said sitting down.‘No Ki,’ Shane said stubbornly. ‘I was just thinking about my essay.’‘Really?’ Kian smiled and helped him correct his essay title.‘Thanx.’ Shane picked his pen up, not looking at Kian.* The heading evening Shane, Mandy, Kian and Daisy went back to their common room with their homework only half finished. The teachers were setting them so much homework that it didn’t seem they could finish it until 11 o’clock.‘What a day!’ Kian sighed heavily the next morning when he and Shane went down to have breakfast.‘What, mate?’‘Look at today!’ Kian pointed at the timetable. ‘We’ve got two physics, one biology, one art and one math! I’m gonna die!’‘I bet we’re having our exam results back,’ said Shane darkly.‘I don’t care, I just simply can’t stand physics and maths,’ said Kian, pouring his glass with milk.‘I’m with you on physics, but maths is interesting,’ said Shane, buttering his toast.‘I wonder where’d you get this bloody talent at maths,’ replied Kian, looking envious. Kian’s favorite subject was everything except physics and maths.Shane was smiling until he saw Mandy and Mark came in together. They passed Shane and Kian’s table without seeing them. Shane heard Mark saying,‘What would you want? I’ll get it for you.’‘No thanks Marty, I’d rather get it myself.’ Mandy said to him. ‘Well, I haven’t seen Shaney, Ki and Daisy all morning, I’ll see you around…’She got her breakfast ready and finally found Shane’s table, so she began walking towards them.Shane got up. ‘I’m finished, Ki, and I’ll be waiting for you at the classroom.’‘Hey, what’s —’ Kian looked at him, but next moment he had already disappeared.Kian shook his head and finished the last bit of his toast as Mandy came over.‘Morning, Ki, where’s Shane?’ She asked.‘He said he finished his breakfast and just left.’‘What?’ Mandy frowned. ‘I’ve just seen him having porridge.’ ‘He obviously didn’t finish,’ said Kian, ‘I dunno what’s wrong with him. See you later.’ And scurried for the classroom, leaving a hurt and bewildered Mandy standing alone at the table.
