I finally received the book-evening with Cary Grant in this morning and am too glad to read it meticulously word by word after waiting for more than two months.Any way, I could like to cite some sentences and remarks on the front page to tell you why I have to wait and choose this biography while so many others published before."the biography Cary Grant deserves ... This is the standout Grant Biography that should remain as his testament in print"by Philadeplhia inquirer"The first book about the real Cary-lively, warm, always entertaining, totally honest-like the man himself."by Gregory Peck"it is funny, lovely book about Cary."by Katharine HepburnI do hope that I would have enough spare time to read the book and pastes any interesting stories.

in 1952 Cary Grant retired from motion pictures..........Richard Anderson , says:"Cary figured his career was over, He was wrong, but he thought audiences didi not like this stuff any more, that the whole business had changed and the style of Marlon Brando and the others had taken over."To Catch A Thief Brought Cary Grant out of retirement........During the filming Grant Came to realize he was working with a woman who was much more than a pretty face . Thereafter he admited Grace Kelly tremendously and was a devoted friend until her death in 1982, when he paid her a monumental tribute.Cary Grant:" I think the most memorable and honest actress I have ever worked with was Grace Kelly. Don't misunderstand. I appreciated Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, Deborah Kerr,Kate Hepburn and all the women I worked with......Grant always disliked being asked:"who was your favorite leading lady?"......in spite of his diplomacy, Grant allowed his special feeling for Grace Kelly to come out:Grace had a kind of serenity, a calmness, that I had not arrived at that point in my life-and perhaps never will, for all I know. She was so relaxed in front of the camera that she made it look simple. She made acting look as easy as Frank Sinatra made singing appear.........Grace was astonishing. When you played a scene with her, she really listened. She was right there with you. She was Buddha-like in her concentration. She was like Garbo in that respect.

Grant's deep affection was well know to his friends."Every time he got a letter from Grace Kelly, he told me about it." says MICKYZEILER."he was the kind of woman he liked. Barbara Grant is like Grace Kelly-Very elegant and ladylike."LESLIE CARON confirms Grant's taste:" Cary liked women who had a distinction and a certain education about them. that is what he liked about Grace Kelly."

HSH PRINCE RAINIER III said: “ Grace loved and admired Cary and cherished working with him, and she was also proud and happy about the things Cary had said about her professionalism. But Cary was above all a friend. She valued his friendship and wanted me to share that with her. It was my great privilege to know Cary.”ninaluan remarks: it is quite easy to see that the relationship between Cary and Grace, which is beyond common friendship, resembles that between Peck and Hepburn.

Audrey Hepburn and Grant had never met, and STANLEY DONEN looked forward to introducing these two magical personalities. He remembers:” I arranged a dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant in Pairs. Audrey and I arrived first. Cary came in, and Audrey stood up and said, ‘I am so nervous.’ He said,’why’ and she said,’ meeting you, working with you- I am so nervous.’ And he said,’ don’t be nervous , for goodness’s sake. I am thrilled to know you. Here, sit down at the table. Put your hands on the table, palms up, put your head down and take a few deep breaths.’“we all sat down, and Audrey put her hands on the table. I had ordered a bottle of red wine. When she put her head down, she hit the bottle, and the wine went all over Cary’s cream-colored suit. Audrey was humiliated. People at other tables were looking, and everybody was buzzing. It was an horrendous moment. Cary was a half hour from his hotel, so he took off his coat and comfortably sat through the whole meal like that.”Hepburn agrees: “ he took it so well, rather like he did in Charade when I dropped the ice cream on his suit. That scene came out of the experience in the restaurant. Can you imagine how I felt? I wanted to crawl into a hole. I felt terrible and kept apologizing, but Cary was so dear about it. The next day he sent me a box of Caviar with a little note telling me not to feel bad.”ninaluan remarks: Cary can always be so elegant and gentle.

Audrey Hepburn found Grant an extremely sensitive person, with “ lots of antennas. He was very gentle and very dear with me. Working with him was a joy. There was something special which is quite undeniable, about Cary. He was expressive and yet reserved. He was a quiet man basically, for somebody who dealt in comedy, and yet very much to the point. He led a quiet life. I do, too. I think a lot of it has to do with shyness and wanting to be with people you are comfortable with instead of having to always break new ground.”“I think because he was a vulnerable man, he recognized my vulnerability. We have that in common. He had more wisdom than I to help me with it. There was something mystic about Cary, which I have never been able to put my finger on, but I think he had a deep perception of life. He said one thing very important to me one day when I was probably twitching and being nervous. We were sitting next to each other waiting for the next shot. And he laid his hand one my two hands and said,’ you have got to learn to like yourself a little more.’ I have often thought about that.’

Audrey Hepburn:" He knew what I was feeling before I did, or any body else for that matter."

Cary: “ all my films were favorites In many ways. In one I loved the director but not the leading lady. In another it was the script but not the cast. Still another would be a box-office hit. An awful lot of stuff goes into the making of a film. It is all jells, then you have got a pretty good one.”So said Grant in public. Privately Grant admitted he especially like The Awful Truth, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, Gunga Din, The Philadelphia Story, None but the Lonely Heart, Notorious, To Catch a thief, Indiscreet, Charade, Father Goose, and North by Northwest.ninaluan remarks: Although I cannot see all his favoriate movies, I still fascinate with his masterpieces such as bring up baby, charade, notorious and north by northwest, watching more than ten times never boring me.

North by Northwest was to be his last film with the enigmatic but brilliant director Alfred Hitchcock.. When North by Northwest was released, Grant was thrilled to have been part of it, but during the production he had reservations that terrified the film’s screen writer, ERNEST LEHMAN, who says,’ Cary was charming, thoughtful, and times surprisingly worrisome.” “we were in the last weeks before shooting began, Jimmy Stewart had badly wanted the leading role, but Mr. Hitchcock and I wanted Cary and suddenly all Cary could think about and talk about was how desperately he wanted out of the movie.”“ the role was all wrong for Cary, the picture would be a disaster. Apparently Hitch was accustomed to this sort of thing from Cary, so he just shrugged his shoulders and held fast. MGM held on, too. But I was unnerved by all his doubts. Did he (Hitch)know something we did not know?”ninaluan remarks: Cary generally tried to give up some famous films by which he can be the most significant star in hollywood, whereas Hitch seems to understand Cary perfectly and never worry about Cary's rejection to the role in the north by northwest.

Cary Grant: Hitch and I had a rapport and understanding deeper than words. He was very agreeable human being, and we were compatible. I always went to work whistling when I worked with him because everything on the set just as you envisioned it would be. Nothing ever went wrong. He was so incredibly well prepare. I never knew anyone as capable. He was a tasteful, intelligent, decent, and patient man who knew the actor’s business as well as he knew his own. He could be very calm in the most difficult of situation. A fire broke out once on the set. And he just looked around and asked someone to take care of it so we could finish the shoot.Cary and Hitchcock had a mutual respect for one another, Hitchcock liked people he felt comfortable with –people he did not have to direct. He loved working with James Stewart for the same reasonsShortly before Hitchcock died, he told BARRIE, “ knowing Cary is the greatest association I have had with any film actor. Cary is the only actor I ever loved in my whole life"
