A lightweight bout between former two-division champion B.J. Penn and The Ultimate Fighter 22 winner Ryan Hall was announced Wednesday for UFC 232, which is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 29.
Talks of the potential matchup were first reported by TalkMMA.
This will be Penn’s first fight since UFC Oklahoma City in June 2017, where he lost a majority decision to Dennis Siver. It was the fifth straight loss for the 39-year-old Penn, who has not won a fight in almost eight years. Penn is 16-12-2 as a pro, and in his prime was considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He has held both the UFC lightweight and welterweight championship, but his last three appearances were contested at 145 pounds.
Hall, 33, is a grappling specialist who is coming off of his own lengthy hiatus. The TUF 22 lightweight tournament champion hasn’t fought since winning a unanimous decision over Gray Maynard at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale to improve his record to 6-1. His other UFC win was a unanimous decision nod over Artem Lobov.
