Annabel Croft assesses if Novak Djokovic should hire another coach after Marian Vajda return-from Metro (伦敦地铁报)George Bellshaw
Annabel Croft hailed Novak Djokovic’s decision to team up with Marian Vajda once again, although she questioned whether he would need to add another backroom staff member going forwards.
The Serb split with his long-term mentor in a surprise move last year as he completely shook up his team.
Andre Agassi and, subsequently, Radek Stepanek were brought on board, but after a difficult period marred by a loss of form and a longstanding elbow problem, the pair left Team Djokovic following an early exit at the Miami Open – the 30-year-old’s third consecutive defeat.
Soon after, Vajda was spotted on court with the 12-time Grand Slam major winner in Marbella and it was confirmed by the Serb’s agent that his former coach would accompany him to the next Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo.

Though it’s not confirmed if the pair will extend their partnership beyond that tournament, former British No. 1 Croft believes it’s a good move to bring his ‘second father’ back to his team.
‘I am actually not surprised at all,’ Croft exclusively told Metro.co.uk. ‘I kind of half expected him to go back full circle and return to his original coach because Marian Vajda has been like a second father to Novak Djokovic. He knows Novak better than anybody.
‘I think Novak needed to go out and explore other avenues and see what might work but it feels like a really good decision.

Should Djokovic be interested in teaming up with Lendl, he may well face competition from world No. 4 Alexander Zverev and Croft believes it would be a difficult decision to choose between two of the game’s most talented stars.
‘They’re very different prospects as people, in Djokovic there’s the motivation to try and get him back to where he was at, winning Grand Slam titles again,’ she continued.
‘I believe that a champion’s mentality is always there, it’s not too far away. That’s how Nadal got his game back together again, he did it by going back to basics, he didn’t change coaches, he stuck with Toni Nadal and did a lot of really intense work again.
‘Novak Djokovic is in that calibre. You’re talking about someone who has won multiple Grand Slam titles.
‘He hasn’t forgotten how to play tennis, he’s just gone through a really tricky rough patch and I think you can’t write these champions off. You do it at your peril.

Whereas if he was to go with Zverev, that would be someone young, up-and-coming, a new star on the block – the world is his oyster, everything is up ahead. He hasn’t won a Grand Slam yet so it’s totally different places.’
One of Djokovic’s great rivals Andy Murray is also on the road to recovery, and British tennis has simply not felt the same without him.
The long-term absence of the three-time Grand Slam winner has sharpened the focus on the next crop of young talent in the UK, with Murray himself questioning where ‘the next generation are’.
Regardless of whether you’re seeking out the ‘new Andy Murray’ or not, there’s no question the sport needs to diversify on British shores and the Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) ‘Tennis For Kids’ initiative – where children between the ages of 4-11 are able to receive six tennis lessons, a tennis racquet, balls and a T-shirt all for just £25 – aims to achieve just that.

‘Some of these campaigns, people automatically assume that you’re out searching for the next Andy Murray.
‘It’s not about that at all, it’s about kids getting engaged with something physical, learning a new skill, meeting new friends and hopefully you want them to enjoy that sport for the rest of their lives.
‘So it’s about grass roots and really getting kids engaged in a wonderful activity and sport.’
