Alternatively, deciding to use the random dice element can be more of a "berserker" effect and you can signal that that's what you're doing by playing your combat card face up. Play it face-down and it has it's normal effects.

My wife and I also like Kemet 2 players and we have a couple of house rules that we borrowed form another thread to make things better for 2 players. We remove all of the duplicate tiles of the same color to make more competition e.g., +1 strength on defense red tile. Also once somebody buys one of the power tiles that are in every color e.g., the victory point tile, we remove the other 2. We find that these house rules add more tension.
I would say: go for it!

I think that this game works well also with 2 players. Of course is better with more, but it is still very good with 2. The major problem is that you have too many available options related two powers... so you spend the first turns just buyin each other to overpower your army. That makes the strategy on getting the best powers less interesant.
My advice would be, as ken wrote, to reduce two tiles per level per colour, instead of the original four. To do that, first remove all the duplicate tiles (like in white colour level 1), and also eliminate all but one of the powers duplicated in different colours (like extra victory point). So, at this stage you will have levels with two, three or four tiles. Now you will have two options:
The more traditional: Remove the excendent tiles in order to have only two tiles per level & colour. You could agree which one you would to remove (personally I would for example remove the one that gives you a different combat card). Consider also that it doesn't make too much sense to have more than 2 creatures per player. If there is not agreement, just decide it randomly.
The more innovative: Order the tiles by color and level, but putting face down level 2, 3, and 4. Remove in level one those that you do not want in order to have only two powers per coulour. For levels 2, 3 and 4, remove randomly as needed also in order to have two powers per level and colour (but do not see which one you have discarded). The two players starts with 3 pyramids level 1. When they upgrade the pyramid, the tiles of this level and colour will be revealed. (a more radical alternative is that the tiles are not revealed and you make blind purchases...).
Personally I would prefer the more traditional, which will let you to have a strategy, but sometimes is funy to introduce some chaos in the games.
Enjoy it.
