In 2005, a mainstream TV drama, the 34-episode "Calculation" finally brought Liu to the national spotlight. Liu's own company invested in the production. Liu himself directed, took the leading role and acted as supervisor. The series became firmly ensconced at the top of the viewer ratings all around the country.
Liu said, "I never saw myself as a director before. In preparing for that role,I talked to many directors about scripts to help fill in gaps in understanding. But instead of giving my ideas to directors time and again, I decided to direct this show myself. "
Sitting in the director's chair for the first time, Liu came up with a program rich in mystery, wisdom, sophistication, a touch of romance and even cruelty.
Calculation was adapted from Mai Jia's novel of the same title. The author initially resisted the idea for a TV adaptation. Eventually Mai was moved by Liu's persistence. A newly added character drew together the five separate stories in the book. Liu plays the charismatic Qian Zhijiang in the TV series. He's a sophisticated character with great wisdom and a steely will. The role established a solid fan base around Liu all over China.
