The then 16-year-old Dubliner had prepared for the required three song and dance routines but he was more concerned about the things he couldn't practise and improve. "I remember going into the audition, seeing a lot of good looking boys and thinking 'you're not going to get in here'," says Gately, as he relaxes his 5ft 6ins frame against the wall outside their London rehearsal room.
