A：Not really, though there are exceptions. Quentin Tarantino's agent, for example, is one of the most honest, respected people around. But he's the exception, not the rule.

But an honest agent isn't going to get very far. Client asks why they didn't get a job, you say 'because the studio hates you' or 'you're too fat' and you get fired. Are there many examples of artists spurring lucrative jobs for something less lucrative but more interesting? Does the agent usually back it, knowing it could potentially lead to better jobs in the future?

The art vs. commerce tradeoff does exist and the general rule is 'one for me, one for them,' meaning one money job for each artistically challenging / interesting job. Good agents, at least in talent, almost never push actors to take money jobs in bad movies. They kill careers and the client will remember the agent pushing them to do it.

I'd really like to post about Adam Sandler. I'm not (nor ever was) a fan of his movies, but I worked at a large Manhattan restaurant which he frequented often - this was several years ago.
He was always accompanied by an entourage of his friends - never really celebrities, I got the impression they were childhood, high school, etc friends.
In any event, they would order nearly everything on the menu. I'm talking, literally, hundreds of dishes and proceed to gorge themselves silly. All the while, Adam would barely eat as many, many people would approach and ask him for a photo, a handshake, or a joke.
He obliged everyone. He was patient, kind and compassionate to every person that came up to him. He never ate, he just took his crew to town and held court, kindly and humbly, making sure to thank everyone who approached him for taking the time to say hi, congratulate him on a movie, or what not.
This particular restaurant was frequented, at the time, by celebrities quite often and they varied in their appreciation of the public. Adam Sandler was in a class of his own. I have always maintained that he is the nicest guy in the business out there as he proved it again and again.

Natalie Portman - very kind, quiet. Vegetarian (maybe even vegan at the time?). Kept to herself and often dined early in the evening to avoid dinner/late night crowds. Didn't have any preference about seating, only particular about the food she ordered.

Tom Hanks - as mentioned above very nice. Kept to himself and had a security detail to keep people away - but was great to people who "made it through." Bold personality, filled a room. Unreal how tall he was in real life.

Drew Barrymore - amazing woman. So unbelievably amazing, kind, and beautiful. She's also very short - you really don't get a good sense of celebrity in movies. She was about as petite as they come. Had a great experience with her.

Before my parents got divorced, they used to have my brother and I act. They would take us to auditions and we tried to get any part in anything. Well my brother got a little tiny part in Bruce Almighty. We got to go on set and kind of wander about and it was pretty fun. My brother was little and wanted to meet Jennifer Aniston, so he asked around and finally got a hold of her. We had lunch with her on set and she was such an amazing, down to earth person. She didn't act like she was a big shot, she wasn't stuck up, and needless to say it was the coolest lunch ever. After we finished we all got up, thanked her and my brother wanted a picture, so right as my brother and Jennifer we're about to get their picture taken, Jim Carrey walks by. Jennifer was like hey Jim, get your ass over here! It was funny. Jim Carrey was definitely a strange guy, he wasn't really an asshole but he was all that polite either. It seemed like he had something on his mind, but hey he stopped, posed for the picture, and said hey to us, so he can't be all that bad.

I work in film, so meet quite a few, and generally only tell stories to squash awful rumors:

OK. I worked at a world-famous restaurant in Los Angeles for several years as a waiter. I've waited on dozens and dozens of celebrities.
Drew Barrymore, the nicest fucking person ever, and a huge tipper. I waited on her 4 or 5 times. She has (had?) terrible taste in men, the worst of whom was Tom Green. Tom Green was just fucking awful. A Mopey, whiney, douche nozzle.
John Travolta: Nice guy, would come in with his boyfriend for a late-night rendezvous.
Cameron Diaz: She drank a lot of wine. A lot.
Sean Connery: Famous as the worst customer a waiter can get in a restaurant. Rude, cheap and demanding.
On a separate occasion (not as a waiter) I had a chance to meet Ryan Reynolds. He was exactly as douchey as you would expect him to be. He had no reason to be a douche to me, but he was. I really don't like him.
Sandra Bullock: Sweet and shy.
Jonah Hill: Exactly like he seems. Friendly and easygoing, very funny.
