By Emma Dibdin and Simon Reynolds
Saturday, Dec 27 2014, 09:00 GMT
Christmas is over, and New Year's is bearing down upon us like a predatory alien seductress or a savagely ruthless photojournalist (take your pick).
You've already seen our list of the 25 best movies of the year so far, and now it's time to single out the actors and actresses who made the biggest impression on us in 2014.
Below are Digital Spy's 12 favourite big-screen performances of the year.

1. Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)【
Perhaps the most instantly iconic movie character of the year, Nightcrawler's Lou Bloom is the walking embodiment of naked ambition. A drifter determined to carve himself out a career, Lou stalks the streets of LA in search of grisly crime scenes to capture on camera, selling the footage on to the highest bidding news outfit.
As the film's title implies, Lou is closer to predatory animal than man, Jake Gyllenhaal's wolfish smile and gaunt physique turning him wraithlike in his ruthless determination to succeed at all costs. It's a physically and psychologically transformative turn that you can't take your eyes off of, equally compelling and repellent.

2. Scarlett Johansson (Under the Skin)【
2014 has been a career-redefining year for Scarlett Johansson, with roles in Spike Jonze's Her, Luc Besson's Lucy and Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier solidifying her status as both critical darling and box office dynamite.
But it was Jonathan Glazer's queasily gorgeous sci-fi Under The Skin that gave Johansson her most captivating role to date. Playing a predatory alien who takes human form in order to lure men to their disturbingly abstract doom, Johansson was utterly mesmerising in what came close to a silent performance. She's convincingly unnerving and otherworldly, yet also vulnerable as her character gradually becomes changed by the humanity she feeds on.
3. Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game)【
Playing an asocial genius who alienates those around him is well within Benedict Cumberbatch's wheelhouse, and yet his turn as the pioneering and persecuted Alan Turing is still utterly different from any he's given before.
It's the performances that hold The Imitation Game together despite its often clumsy script, and Cumberbatch segues beautifully between humour and pathos as Turing's tragic story is chronicled. Believably cerebral yet profoundly human, this performance earns every bit of the Best Actor buzz it's gathering.

4. Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)【
Rosamund Pike established herself as a dependable supporting star after breaking through in 2002 Bond film Die Another Day, but things changed dramatically for the Brit actress this year thanks to her role in David Fincher's Gone Girl.
Fans who tore through Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel were keen to see how Pike brought the complex, psychologically scarred Amy Dunne to life. She delivered in style, turning in an ice-in-the-veins portrayal of a manipulative sociopath always one step ahead of the game. An Academy Award nomination surely awaits.
5. Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)【
The debate surrounding the value of actors working in performance capture surfaced again this summer when Andy Serkis delivered a stunning turn as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Building on the work of the blockbuster's predecessor Rise, director Matt Reeves married cutting edge visual effects with emotional, heart-wrenching work from Serkis as the foundation. Humanity bled through the pixels, making this the most compelling 'assisted performance' we've seen to-date. Serkis has displayed a true mastery of this specific form of acting through Gollum and Caesar – isn't it about time we start taking him seriously?

8. Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis)【
Acting, singing, guitar-playing, cat-wrangling… Oscar Isaac's breakthrough performance as a down-at-heel folk singer in the Coen brothers' latest is a quadruple threat at the very least.
And that's understating the depth and detail of what Isaac is doing here. Llewyn is a bitter, acerbic and prickly character, potentially difficult to warm to. The songs he plays are his only real moments of emotional exposure, and Isaac injects every performance with such soulful pathos that you feel for him against the odds.
9. Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night)【
Marion Cotillard always does her most compelling work in her native tongue, and the Dardenne brothers' emotionally rich blue-collar drama is a showcase for her.
Having been made redundant after an absence from work, Cotillard's troubled Sandra has one weekend to convince her co-workers to give up their bonuses so that she can keep her job. Cotillard captures the numbness and paralysis of depression with a rare level of depth, her face endlessly fascinating to watch as she reacts to every new challenge her humbling situation produces.

10. Brendan Gleeson (Calvary)【
Brendan Gleeson and director John Michael McDonagh established a strong working relationship on The Guard, and the duo went even better for their follow-up Calvary.
Gleeson plays a priest threatened with murder by a man in his confessional booth, and the subsequent days see him attempting to serve the community as best he can and reconcile with his estranged daughter. McDonagh's film plays out like an epic Irish Western, with Gleeson utterly magnetic at its heart. This was one of the great under-the-radar highlights of 2014.
11. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)【
Ellen's star-packed selfie may have been the headline moment of this year's Oscars, but it's easy to forget that the internet went into full-on meltdown when Leonardo DiCaprio was overlooked again for the Best Actor Academy Award.
In his fifth collaboration with Martin Scorsese he was sensational as Jordan Belfort, the stockbroker whose New York boiler rooms rinsed millions from unsuspecting investors. DiCaprio threw everything into the role, showing us a man with ruthless ambition, drive and energy. The highlight? Probably the drug-addled Belfort's attempts to crawl into his sports car. Who knew Leo had these slapstick skills in him?
12. Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel)【
The pairing of Wes Anderson and Ralph Fiennes seemed like an odd mix when we first heard about The Grand Budapest Hotel, but it was a partnership that delivered in spectacular fashion.
As Monsieur Gustave H, the concierge at the titular hotel, Fiennes brought wit, charm and wry humour to a fastidious and ultra-committed character. His aloof charisma sparked well with the naivety of young Zero (played brilliantly by Tony Revolori), making this the best character Fiennes has played in years. What we'd give to see a Gustave H spin-off movie…
