Adam Rippon considered giving up ice skating. His competitive drive and love of the sport led him to keep training.
Rippon, 24, of Clarks Summit was in contention for the men’s Olympic team in 2010 and 2014, but missed out both times.
“In 2010, I felt like I was still very young, but this last time I took it really hard. Going into training, I was ranked first internationally and in the United States. There was a lot of pressure and it was such a blow. I really contemplated not competing anymore, but I really enjoy training, skating and working toward a goal. I tried to let go of the stress.”
Rippon won a silver medal in the 2014 Finlandia Trophy in Finland Oct. 12 and plans to compete at Skate Canada, to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in British Columbia and Trophee Bompard, to be held Nov. 21-23 in France as part of the 2014 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series.
Rippon, who currently trains in Paramount, Calif., began skating at the age of 10 and at 13 realized he might have a future in the sport.
“That’s when I started working with different coaches and knew I had to talent to take it more seriously,” he said. “I’ve always loved doing it.”
According to Rippon, it takes an intense training schedule to move into the upper echelon of figure skaters in the country and world.
“I spend about 20 hours a week on the ice each week and another 15-20 hours off the ice for different workouts,” he said. “It takes up all of your time to be a professional athlete. It’s definitely a full-time commitment.”
Rippon, who represents the Skating Club of New York, became the first single skater to win two world junior championships, taking home gold in 2008 and 2009.
“I was really proud of it and did it kind of unexpectedly,” he said. “I didn’t know if I would be able to return and when I was assigned there was a lot of pressure. I just skated and let all my training speak for itself. It was a great lesson and has given me confidence over the years.”
Rippon received a special distinction when one of his signature moves, “The Rippon Lutz,” a variation of the triple lutz where he places both hands over his head, became part of skating vernacular.
“When you get to be an elite skater, a lot of things are the same,” Rippon said. “I wanted to do something to separate myself from the crowd. I’m very fortunate. It’s a trademark in my programs and it’s really exciting.”
According to Rippon, making a coaching change to Rafael Arutunian in 2012 has improved his skating and confidence immensely.
“It was such a great opportunity,” Rippon said. “He has worked with so many great skaters in the past. He really pushes me to the max and has helped me get to a level that I didn’t know I was capable of reaching.”
Arutunian also trains Rippon’s best friend, Ashley Wagner, who represented the United States in the 2014 Olympic Games in Russia.
“We have really great camaraderie on the ice,” Rippon said.
Rippon’s advice for young skaters is to always strive to improve and push yourself to the limit.
“Always set goals for yourself,” he said. “I think that is the most important thing at any level of skating. When you think you’re working hard, you can always push yourself a little more. We’re always giving a little more when we’re doing our very best.”
While Rippon isn’t completely ruling out a run at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, his immediate focus is on the World Championships in Shanghai, China in 2015 and Boston, Mass. in 2016.
“Ideally, I’d love to still be healthy enough to attempt to qualify for the next Olympics,” Rippon said. “I’ll assess where I’m at in my training. If I feel that I’m in a good place physically and mentally, I’d definitely love to train until 2018.”
