Trying to pin down Benedict Cumberbatch is like trying to nail wind to a tree.

Just in the two weeks that EMPIRE has been trying tospeak to him he has been on location playing Richard III, in a green studioplaying The Hobbit*s Necromancer, crawling round a fake jungle as Shere Khanand his head contemplating Hamlet. EMPIRE finally manages to still him for twoseconds at Heathrow Airport, about to jump onto a flight bound for the TorontoFilm Festival, where he will present to the assembled masses his latesttransformation, as World War II codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.Such is the constant rush of being Cumberbatch that our conversation nearlymakes him miss his flight.

Cumberbatch:Relatively little. I knew the headlines. I knew he was a codebreaker and thathe was prosecuted for being a homosexual--actually, this isn*t true. I knew allof it because I*d seen Breaking The Code--with the inimitable Derek Jacobi, whowas spellbinding--which I remembered watching with my mum and dad. So I wasquite aware of him, but the script brought out a lot that I didn*t know. Iwasn*t quite aware of the level of secrecy the [codebreakers had to maintain]and things that came to light through the Official Secrets Act... The[script*s] conjunctions of the secrets, of a man who has to keep hishomosexuality a secret, and the breaking of secrets in the World War II, andthe strands of his life it shed light on, I thought was masterful. I reallyknew who he was reading that script. I could see why people in authority wouldfind him infuriating, but I don*t think he was acting in any sort ofsociopathic way or through thinking he was better; he just was better. He justhad another way of being and I found that incredibly endearing.
康伯巴奇: 非常少.我只知道关於它的报导.我知道他是一位解密者和他给身为一位同性恋者而被入罪--事实上,这都不是真的.我知道这麼多是因为我看了<破解密码>--有着别具一格的德里克·雅可比,使它引人入胜--我记得我是跟父母一起看的.所以我挺注意他的,但剧本亦有出一些我不知道的事.我并不知道保密等级一事[解密员一定要知道的事]和要如何通过官方保密措施去告发...剧本把男人要保着的同性倾向的秘密和在二战时解的密码连着,使他的生活暴露在别人眼前,我觉得这是十分高超的.透过看剧本我知道图灵是一个怎样的人.我能知道当权者会觉得他气死人,但我不觉得他做任何反*社会行*动或通过沉思而觉得他是个更好人;他只是更好的人.他用另一途径去活着,而我发现他是难以致信的可爱.
