The New York Film Critics Circle took the rare step Monday of expelling Armond White, the film critic for CityArts, and of suspending the New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick for a year, according to a person with knowledge of the circle’s meeting on Monday.
Mr. White was accused of yelling abuses at Steve McQueen, the director of “12 Years a Slave,” as he took the stage to accept the best director prize at the circle’s awards ceremony last week. Mr. Lumenick was punished for revealing the tallies of votes, which the circle said went against its bylaws.
Mr. Lumenick defended himself at the meeting, the insider said, but to little avail. Mr. White was not present.
“They were repeat offenders,” the person said, “Action had to be taken.”
