enedict Cumberbatch is talking a mile a minute, as he does when he’s anxious or happy or a combination of both, which he frequently is these days. Over lunch inSoho, the 37-year-old British actor is talking about the screening he attendedthe night before, a tough cut of The Fifth Estate, his film with director Boll Condon about WikeLeaks founder Julian Assange. It was the first time he’d seen it. A woman from Adelaide told Cumberbatch he got Assange’s Australian twang just right, “so I was psyched about that,” but he was upset to see himself slouch in one or two scenes.

“Somebody said to me the other day, ‘You’re an overnight success’—but it didn’t happen overnight.” says Cumberbatch, ordering beet-and-avocado salad. “Weirdly, when I was young I always wanted to be 32. I just thought it was the age when things wound get to that comfortable driving-seat position: a young father, careerthat was stable. That was the age I’ve always been romantic about. I think Iwas an old soul。 A teacher once compared me to William Blake, which was a little worrying; I never saw visions of angels in trees in graveyards by the side of the road.”

Offsetting the tousled, raffish, slightly boyish air is that rich, Burtonesque baritone of his, last heard terrorizing the crew of the starship Enterprisein the sci-fi blockbuster Star Trek into Darkness. Bill Condon calls it “a cello,” in which case conversation with him can resemble a Haydn concerto, allegro con brio, The man can talk. When I ask him whether he talked to Streep about the niceties of playing a real-life person, he delivers a ten-minute answer (10:32, to be precise), brilliantly digressive, touching on Assange and Margaret Thatcher, on process and music and notes, but the actual answer, strictly speaking, is: no. “I’m sorry; did I get off-track?” he says, blinking innocently, as if abashed by his own brilliance. He says his mother always knows when he’s about to start another season of Sherlock because he starts talking double speed. “His voice-mail messages are one of the great highlights of our friendship,” says the actress Rebbeca Hall, who has known him since she was thirteen and saw him in a production of The Taming of the Shrew at Harrow. “They contain an entire conversation. They’re just joyous.”

“It’s almost like a primitive ritual, a weird Dionysian experience among nice middle-class women who are devoted to him,” says Danny Boyle, who directed the actor in the acclaimed London stage productiong of Frankenstein in 2011, with Cumberbatch alternating the roles of scientist and monster. “I think he gets annoyed that people think of him as being a cerebral, intellectual actor,” Boyle adds. “He’s an immersive actor; he’s physical. You have to keep feeding him, trying to keep him stimulated. The engine has to be stoked all the time. The joke is that Hollywood thinks it’s investigating him right now to see what he’s made of. The truth is: He’s investigating them.”

Murray’s up a set,” Cumberbatch tells me excitedly on the phone from London a few days later. He’s packed, ready to go to the Glastonbury Festival, whose lineup this year includes the Rolling Stones and Phoenix. “I feel more in my 20s than I did when I was in my 20s,” he tells me, having spent those years in a committed relationship with the actress Olivia Poulet, whom he met at university and from whom he split in 2010. “It happened very gradually, very mutually,” he says. “We’re still very good friends. There was no acrimony, I love her, adore her, always will.” After the breakup, he embarked on a hot-air expedition over the plain of Namibia: “It was the most romantic thing I’ve ever done on my own. Everyone else was coupled up. It was horrible.

The only other place he gets the same release is acting, he says. After playing Assange and appearing in August, he has roles in Steve McQueen’s 12Years a Slave; Peter Jackson’s Hobbit sequel, in which he gives voice to Smaug the dragon; and The Imitation Game, in which he plays mathematician Alan Turing. “If I were lucky enough to be in the 4 percent of our population that’s working, that’s the first blessing. Second blessing is if you get any decent work; the third blessing is if you get variety of work….” There’s a fourth blessing and a fifth blessing as well (“the fifth being that it’s going my way”). More than likely, there is a sixth and a seventh blessing I never even get to hear about. He keeps talking right up to the second he says goodbye—“OK, great, bye”—turns, and marches off down Sullivan Street, beneath a sweltering New York sun.
