CBS announced Monday that John Lithgow is the latest prominent guest star of the past to sign on for the upcoming final season, which focuses largely on the long weekend nuptials of two of the main characters. Lythgow, who appeared twice on the series in 2011, will reprise the role of Barney's do-gooder dad Jerry Whitaker.

Ted’s future wife was revealed (Cristin Millioti), Marshall received the job of his dreams that unbeknownst to Lily will derail their plans to move to Rome, and Barney and Robin tried to enjoy time together before their wedding day. NEW SEASON: The series’ ninth and final season will take place over the course of Barney and Robin’s wedding weekend. Sherri Shepherd will recur as Daphne, a woman who Marshall meets on his flight home to the wedding. Roger Bart will recur as an employee at the hotel for the big event. Also, Ellie Kemper will guest star, and John Lithgow, Tim Gunn and Wayne Brady return.
