The Heavy is a crime thriller set in London based around intertwining lives of two markedly different brothers. Christian is a Prime Ministerial candidate while Boots (Gary Stretch) is a hired muscle for a notorious criminal. Things reach boiling point when Boots' boss gives him one last job to settle his debt. We go exclusively behind the scenes of this new thriller and have a video of early rehearsals featuring hard-man actor Gary Stretch and former boyband member Lee Ryan.

So tell us a little bit about the character you play in 'The Heavy'?Lee Ryan: The character I play is called Rubin and he's quite unique. He's a bit mad, a bit cheeky, he's a little sh*t, basically. He gets himself in trouble with his mouth and then ends up in real hot water. He's the sort of instigator of jobs that the main character Boots does. His boss is Anawalt who's controlling Boots because he's paying off a debt to him.

What appealed to you about the role?Lee: I'm taking this road into acting now and it was a fantastic role. I've always wanted to get into film, but it was always about choosing the right role first. I don't want to be type-cast in any particular role because I like character acting. I did try and bring a character to Rubin. He's so flamboyant in the way he dresses that he needs to be a large, colourful character cause that's the way he is. A lot of people might say, 'Oh, he's playing himself' but to be honest Rubin's nothing like I am. I think I took some influences from people that I know for the background I gave him, though it probably isn't in the script to understand where Rubin's roots are.

What's your typical day been like? Lee: My work on the film has been quite sporadic. At the beginning I was heavily involved and I'm heavily involved again at the end. The time in between has been great, too, because I've been able to work on other projects I'm involved in and get them going. Hopefully, it's all going to be good for my future.

And have you had any really tough scenes to film? Lee: It's all been quite tough. It takes a lot of concentration. Because Rubin is a character and I love character acting or method acting, where you become that person. There are other techniques people use to deliver lines but I think of my lines and then I try and become that person. I do things before I get on set, like I put my suit on and there are a few movements I start to get in to, little things I think Rubin would do, and I walk about and I talk to the crew totally in character.

What's it like working with Vinnie and Gary? Lee: I've only done a few scenes with Vinnie but he's a really lovely bloke. Gary's just been absolutely fantastic and he’s such a great actor. He's taken extra time to work with me, helping me with any questions I've had, and it's just such a lovely thing. He understands this is my first film and he's got such a good heart – we've become really, really good friends . It's nice to know people like that, especially in this industry.

Has it helped that you, Gary and Vinnie have all come into acting from a different profession? Lee: I suppose so – I hadn't really thought about that! People like them understand where I'm coming from. But at the same time I'm working with people who have always been actors, like Stephen Rea, Sir Christopher Lee and Shannyn Sossamon. They're some pretty big people! When people ask me who I'm in the film with and I mention these names they're like: 'Wow!' And it looks good on my CV!

Have you worked much with Stephen or Christopher? Lee: Stephen Rea was fantastic but I didn't work with Sir Christopher or Shannyn. I met Shannyn and she's a lovely person. I do feel blessed to be in this movie.

And what's next? Lee: I'm working on another album and I hope to be shooting another film in three months – I'm waiting to hear if I've got the part. I spoke to the producer the other day and she said I did, but when I spoke to the director today he said he was still casting... I think that's what you call the film industry right! But I'm excited and there are plenty of other opportunities out there.
