Fulham manager Martin Jol has hit back at Clint Dempsey’s claims that he felt unappreciated at Craven Cottage and insists the Tottenham midfielder wanted to leave for ‘more money’.
The American spent five seasons at Fulham and suggested this week that his acrimonious summer move might not have happened had he felt ‘valued and appreciated enough’.
But Jol, whose Fulham side face Tottenham today, said: ‘I told Clint in our last conversation that I loved him like a son, but he didn’t care because he wanted to move. It is a bit far-fetched.
‘I don’t think it (Dempsey’s comments this week) was personal against me because he never said he didn’t feel loved by me. I think he didn’t feel appreciated. He told me, “You have all the money in the world”, but I haven’t. He wanted a financial move and he wanted to play Champions League. That was the reason.’
Jol added: ‘He wanted to be appreciated financially.’
Dempsey left for a fee in the region of £6million on the last day of the transfer window having not played for Jol this season. The Dutchman refuted reports that the 29-year-old went on strike, but painted a picture of a player with no desire to stay at the club.
He said: ‘I never said that he refused to play but he acted like a player who I couldn’t involve any more. He didn’t want to talk, didn’t want to run - I can’t use you anymore. He wanted to move.’
Jol added: ‘I tried to get him over again but he didn’t want to talk. I tried to convince him - you know how I rated him. He was the best offensive midfield player, he scored more goals than anyone else.’
