Master of Ceremonies, Benedict Cumberbatch, The Park, 1990, introduced the songs and kept everyone entertained with his linking comments.
Extracts from the Introduction to Songs:
The last event I was invited to at the Royal Albert Hall was the Royal World premiere of Skyfall to join Prince Charles, Daniel Craig, Dame Judy Dench, Javier Bardem and Sam Mendes. I had to decline because as I really only had the time and the energy for one truly glamorous evening at this inspiring venue.
I sought out some MCing advice from another Queen.
Bess in Queen Elizabeth sat one day verse 3
Marry come up says good Queen Bess
draw it shorter and prose it less
speeches are things we chiefly bless
When once we have got them over
So here we are and what an occasion. I’m truly honoured to be your MC for the Jubilee Harrow School Songs in the majesty of the Albert Hall.
I was thirteen and a Shell the last time I sang Harrow songs here. It was an extraordinary occasion and one I found a little terrifying up on this stage in case anyone was looking at me. As you can see tonight, and in no small part thanks to Jeremy Lemmon, Martin Tyrell and my time at Harrow, I have started to conquer that fear. And can I take this opportunity to wish Martin Tyrrell and his family all our love and support and for him to carry on achieving an inspirational and speedy recovery.
So back on the night of 22 November 1990. The Queen Mother was our Guest of Honour. And a special frisson was added by Dennis Thatcher’s attendance on the evening of Margaret Thatcher’s resignation. Another historical moment to add to this historical tradition.
I look back on the rest of my time at Harrow with similar mixture of nostalgia and terror. But it cannot be denied those years were formative – though at the time it is a rare thing to be able to deduce where those experiences will lead you. For example, little did I think my time at school would lead to the BBC asking me to play Sherlock Holmes. You see Mr Collins?! It ALL pays off in the end.
But seriously, I stand here to acknowledge the extraordinary debt of gratitude (and money!) that I owe my parents for sending me to a school with the opportunities that Harrow offered and continues to. …And NOT as the creator of Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did to carry out a seance to raise the voices of dead spirits… Although… I do believe there is an element of magic in the time travel involved in tonight’s proceedings.
What we are all part of is symbolised by the unique tradition of our school songs. In them you will find words that unite us as they illuminate the universal experiences of being a school boy. From waking up early in the cold and dark and leaving home a boy and returning an almost man, from the triumphs of the pen and wit to those of brawn and bravery on the sports field. And by uniting us all through singing these words they transcend being historical artifacts by linking us with over 400 years of the schools past. We stop the clocks (though I promise to keep things moving) and shut out the flurry of multi-media technology and all of the noise of our lives to create one noise as 5500 souls become one voice.
They also tell of how to be responsible for the embarrassment of riches that Harrow offers.’
