When some fans think ofRobin Soderling, they'll first recall an ill-tempered match the Swede played against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2007. Soderling tugged at his shorts to mimic Nadal and didn't apologize on net cords. He has matured since then, and former coach Fredrik Rosengren had only positive things to say about the former world No. 4.
"I'm so happy that I really got to know him," Rosengren said. "It was a privilege. Some people may think he's a bad guy or whatever, but he's such a nice guy. He's an unbelievably nice guy."
Soderling concedes he was too serious when on tour.
"Maybe many times it would have been better to focus 90 percent and relax 10 percent," he said. "That I regret a little."
Should Soderling have interacted more with his peers?
"It could have helped me relax a little," he said. "But for me sometimes it felt like [tennis] was really everything and I wanted to give 100 percent. That's why I think I was a little bit quiet and every time I was on court I was so focused. And I didn't really feel like I had any time to do other stuff than play and train."
