Built in 1967, the National Center for Atmospheric Research was situated at the foot of the Rockey Mountain, Boulder, Colorado. Nearby stands the United States Air Force Academy designed by S.O.M. the complete possession of glass all over the building makes it starkly contrast with the surroundings. The United States Air Force Academy differs from it by using the approach of “combination”. The local red Indians like picking the local building material for building work, so the houses they build are in perfect harmony with the environment. I appreciate their houses very much. The designing purpose of the National Center for Atmospheric Research is just to harmonize it with the environment. Stone was picked at local place, and then was added to the concrete as aggregate after being smashed. The concrete is not used for surface decoration. The reddish-brown aggregate, of which the color was same as the mountain stones, exposed outside. The building is composed of several geometric shapes. Because of the continental climate in Colorado, there are fewer windows in the building. The whole building looks like a pale of stones from far away as if that it belongs to the mountains.
