The past year has been a whirlwind for Joseph. He started the year leading the life of any average 12-year-old boy - going to his village school in Canterbury and hanging out with his friends. Joseph could never have predicted that within a year he would have won a BBC talent competition and be releasing his debut album on one of the world's largest record labels SonyBMG. Joseph's magical and expressive treble voice was first noticed at the age of 8 when he sung the theme from Titanic at a family reunion. “This was when I knew Joseph had something really special,” says Joseph's mum. Joseph went on to perform at his local theatre in Canterbury in the title role of Oliver with the original Fagin, the legendary Ron Moody, from the 1968 film. From this amazing experience, Joseph went on to enter a BBC Talent search in which 25,000 children auditioned for the part o the “Little Prince” in the new musical version of the book by Saint Exupery. “My mum was the one that first suggested it. I thought that I wouldn't be in with a chance so I couldn't believe it when I made the last 20, then 10, then 5 and then 1!!!” Plucked from obscurity by the acclaimed opera director Francesca Zambello, Joseph left the normality of school life behind to join an all-star cast as the Little Prince in the BBC screened opera. “It was brilliant to work with Aled Jones, Willard White and Lesley Garrett. I learnt so much,” enthused Joseph. Unknown to Joseph at the time, A&R executives from SonyBMG were visiting the rehearsals every week to see Joseph in action. Before long, Joseph was in discussions about a major record deal. “Being cast in the Little Prince was an amazing experience but getting a record deal from it was beyond my wildest dreams”. Joseph's debut album In Dreams is a collection of his favourite songs, which have inspired him throughout his childhood. “I chose songs that I felt connected to personally and felt represented me,” says Joseph. “Each song has a story behind it. For example Bright Eyes is from the film animation Watership Down which I always used to watch with my mum. It's actually one of my favourite songs on the album as I love the lyrics and it suits my voice so perfectly”. “I chose Walking in the Air from the Snowman as it is totally magical and I am a big fan of Aled Jones's version. I used to watch the film every year on Christmas Day” says Joseph. “Cesar Franck's Panis Angelicus is another favourite of mine. The tune is so rich so I just love singing it”. “Where is Love? Seemed like an obvious choice to me as it's the key track to the musical Oliver, which I performed at my local theatre,” says Joseph. “I also had to include The Little Prince Song as starring in the opera production was such an important experience for me. In just one song, the track really captures the whole musical for me”. Backed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the album also features John Rutter's spine chilling Pie Jesu, Howard Shore's magical In Dreams from the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the ever popular Psalm 23, Morning Has Broken and Elton John's “Circle of Life” from The Lion King (a duet with Amici forever's Jo Appleby). “I called the album In Dreams as I felt it really sums up what the album is all about. All the songs are very reflective and thought provoking. Also the title refers to my own dreams of always wanting to be a singer,” says Joseph. Joseph lives in rural Kent with this family. His mother Deborah is a doctor and author of the book 'The Holistic Doctor'. “All my family and friends have been so supportive of me. They are very proud and encouraging,” says Joseph. Like any other 12 year old, Joseph likes spending his spare time playing football and tennis with his friends. He also loves listening to music by James Blunt, Coldplay and Keane. His musical idols are Robbie Williams and Nigel Kennedy. Joseph's musical adventure is sure to be great one. In fact Joseph is already lined up to perform at a Classic FM concert at the legendary Royal Albert Hall alongside Aled Jones and Joshua Bell. “It's all so exciting, I can't quite believe this is happening to me. I'm not sure how the future will unfold but I hope I can continue singing, recording and acting forever”. One thing is for sure - Joseph's career is most certainly one to watch.
