M-Larsen.net: Can you tell us something nobody knows?
Marit Larsen: Something that nobody knows? Well, I have now read eleven novels by Paul Auster. I love him. The first book I read by him was “Mr. Vertigo”, “The New York Trilogy” is my favorite. I was so excited about his language, it was so musical, so rich, yet so efficient. Very inspiring. Since my lyrics are mostly in English, which is not my mother tongue, I make sure to read a lot of English literature to keep the flow and to expand my vocabulary. Recently, I’ve also fallen head over heels for Lorrie Moore. Dark, funny, heartbreaking.
M-Larsen.net: What question would you like to be asked in an interview?
Marit: I have been asked so much in the last fifteen years. That’s a very hard question! Can we come back to that later?
M-Larsen.net: What would be your profession if you couldn’t be a musician?
Marit: I think I would want to work with literature, write, or be a book editor.
M-Larsen.net: Why?
Marit: I love reading. And I think, being a writer myself – but coming from a different place – I might be able to provide input of some value on other writers’ creative work. I’m pretty good at asking the right questions.
M-Larsen.net: Why did you choose to dye your hair darker?
Marit: Because I wanted a change.
M-Larsen.net: What went into the decision to do so?
Marit: I just wanted to.
M-Larsen.net: Would you like it to have blonde hair again?
Marit: Haha, well actually, it is a little lighter because of the sun at the moment, so maybe I will keep it this way. We’ll see.
M-Larsen.net: Do you like to cook? What kind of food?
Marit: I love to cook and I follow some great food blogs. You’ve got to check out my two favorites, smittenkitchen.com and 101cookbooks.com. Eating out every night on tour can be a thrill, but my kitchen is actually one of the things (apart from my grand piano) I miss the most when I travel. Uh, I love my kitchen at home. I love spending hours there. It’s very therapeutic, just spending hours making a meal, inviting my friends over. I think its the best kind of party, inviting the ones you love and just cooking up nice meals together. I think my favorite thing that I make now that I’m not a vegetarian anymore is a lamb dish that I found in a Jamie Oliver cookbook. It’s lamb, vegetables, red wine, left in the oven for about three and a half hours. You have to really take your time, drink a glass of wine, listen to some great music, I love that. I also love baking, as you probably know.
M-Larsen.net: If you had a time machine, where in time would you go?
Marit: I’ll have to say Laurel Canyon in the late 60′s.
M-Larsen.net: Why?
Marit: I just think it must have been an adventure being part of the songwriter community, all the music, all the drama, Joni, Crosby, Young… Amazing songs came out of it, and I can only imagine how much magic took place there. I would have loved to be there and experience it.

M-Larsen.net: How is it to live in a (supposedly) haunted house?
Marit: I haven’t felt anything uncomfortable. So, if it’s true, it’s working in my favor, so that’s great! Haha.
M-Larsen.net: What is your favorite rock band?
Marit: Still Radiohead! Although I have to add, the other day, I saw a show by a fantastic new artist that’s just coming out with his first album. His name is Jeff Taylor. He is an astonishingly cool singer! Watch out.
M-Larsen.net: Do you want to/will you realize a DVD from the Spark tour?
Marit: There are no plans for one at the moment, but if we were to do one, I’d want to do it in a cool, unique setting, something that doesn’t seem too sterile and proper. The most important thing would be to capture the raw energy and chemistry in the band. I want my audience to feel how much fun we’re having. We’ll see.
M-Larsen.net: What M2M song would you choose to do a cover of?
Marit: Well, I was doing a folksy rendition of “Don’t Say You Love Me” for a while, back in 2006.
M-Larsen.net: Would you do anything else besides “Don’t Say You Love Me”?
Marit: It felt really good doing that song and it fit with the concert we were doing that summer, but I don’t have any immediate plans for covering other M2M songs. I feel like those songs belong to Marion and I, to that time.
M-Larsen.net: Why did you switch the single “Don’t Move” with “Have You Ever”?
Marit: When the album was finished I was thinking “Don’t Move” would be the first single, “Have You Ever” second, and then “Coming Home”. But deciding singles and the order of them is something I leave mostly up to my label. It’s hard for me, who is so deeply involved with everything, to see the album from the outside, knowing what single song represents the album the best. For me, they are a collection of the ten, eleven favorite songs I’ve written since the last album, all connected to each other in one way or the other.
M-Larsen.net: How many different guys have you written songs about total?
Marit: Haha. I’ll never tell. I don’t know, actually. Different people sneak their way into my songs all the time. Sometimes the subject of a song changes while I’m writing the song.
M-Larsen.net: Did any of them piss you off or enchant you enough to warrant more than one?
Marit: Possibly.
M-Larsen.net: Any horror/funny stories from the road?
Marit: First of all, something always goes wrong. I think being a professional live musician just means how good you become at covering up your mistakes. But there are many stories. For instance, when we left New York a couple of days after the show in February, it turned out we’d parked our soccer Mom minibus, with all of the instruments and gear, beside a fire hydrant (we’re European! We don’t know these rules!), and got towed. Teitur and I were visiting East village radio, playing a couple of songs and talking about the tour, and meanwhile our tour manager had to spend hours at the NYPD to get the bus back. We were so late! When we got to the venue, people were already sitting down waiting for the show. We waltzed in, jackets on, suitcases and guitars in hand, ran backstage, I brushed my hair, went out on stage and started playing straight up. It was a great show, a great night. Strangely, when something like that happens, or the power goes out, things like that, as long as you follow your instincts and do your best, it leaves you, and the audience, with the feeling that something special is going down, that THIS will end up being the night you remember. In a good way. When you’re in a car, in a traffic jam, stressed out, biting your lips, thinking “This is never going to work! We’re going to have to cancel!” and it does indeed work out, it’s the best feeling in the world.
