If you missed last night’s Rascal Flatts one-night only movie event ‘Changed,’ you’ll be sorry.
NCM Fathom Events, Big Machine Records & AEG Network Live presented the film, where viewers were treated to performances of songs from Rascal Flatts’s new album, Changed, in the Franklin Theater in Franklin, TN, as well as behind-the-scenes footage from the studio and soundstages. The real treat, though, is hearing the guys talk about the music – it’s one thing to hear the songs being played, but it’s another to have Jay DeMarcus shyly look down at the keyboard before launching into one of his newest favorites, “Come Wake Me Up,” or have Joe Don Rooney tell you how much his wife loves “Hot in Here” while he quietly sings the first verse.
It didn’t disappoint fans who have been there from the beginning, either: they showed a few intimate acoustic performances of favorites like “Bless the Broken Road,” “What Hurts the Most,” and “I Won’t Let Go.” When the guys weren’t talking about their new album, they were sharing stories about their families, fans, and loved ones, which segued beautifully into the stripped-down concert series. Home movies of the trio with their wives and kids (or on Gary LeVox’s Fast Cars and Freedom Farm, his go-to place to unwind) were touching and revealing, and it was obvious how much they cared for their families.
But ultimately, the movie was about their newest album, and the event kicked off with a live performance of “Banjo,” featuring Ashley Campbell, the banjo player in their music video. Throughout the course of the movie, they also played “Hot in Here,” a steamy upbeat track that’s exactly what it sounds like, “She’s Leaving,” fast and rocking, with an infectious melody, and “Come Wake Me Up,” a heartbreaking ballad that really lets Gary’s lead vocals shine. “Changed,” the title track, is clearly one of the most important songs on the album – Gary co-wrote it, and they talked in detail about the meaning of the song and their group identity. They went through some tough times with their management change last year, which took a big toll on the group (Gary admitted things were “going south,” with the guys wanting to quit), but the album Changed shows how much stronger they are because of it.
After seven albums and 27 top singles, Rascal Flatts seems to have found where they want to be. Joe Don summed it up for the band by saying “Changed” is “truly what Rascal Flatts is really about,” a realization that took them 13 years of playing together. The guys don’t take themselves too seriously, though, as the three joked around in candid moments in the film. The in-theater concert ended with a high-octane performance of “Life is a Highway,” the promise of a new tour in June, and the “Banjo” music video over the film’s credits.
For super, casual, or even fair-weather fans, Changed was a one-night-only treat. The reveal of the new songs from “Changed,” complete with performances, old audience favorites, and emotional behind-the-scenes footage, was like a personal concert. Rascal Flatts certainly has a way of making you feel like you’re right at home with them, and this was no exception. If you didn’t get out to see it, make sure you pick up their new album so you can hear what everyone’s talking about! Changed is available in stores and online now, and it sounds like yet another smash for the supergroup.
