The structure of the RAD51 RecA-homology domain bound to BRC repeat 4 of BRCA2 shows that the BRC repeat mimicks a short RAD51 motif used by the recombinase to self-associate into a nucleoprotein filament, an essential intermediate of genetic recombination. BRCA2 thus controls RAD51 activity by acting as a binding antagonist to RAD51 filament formation.

In order to transmit a signal inside the cell, FGF assembles in a specific ternary complex with its transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase (FGFR), and a low-affinity heparan sulphate (HS) receptor. The structure of the FGFR ectodomain bound to FGF and a HS-mimic heparin oligosaccharide defined the role of heparin in potentiating the affinity of the growth factor for its receptor, and demonstrated the mode of FGFR dimerisation, an essential prerequisite for transmembrane signalling.Reviewed in Current Opinion in Structural Biology.

Figure 8: Acute hearing loss therapy by extracorporeal fibrinogen reduction With H.E.L.P.® apheresis (heparin-induced extracorporeal lipoprotein fibrinogen precipitation, B.Braun, Medizintechnologie GmbH, Germany) LDL, lipoprotein (a) and fibrinogen is precipitated and filtered out at an acid pH of 5.12 in the extracorporeal plasma circulation using heparin. The filtered plasma then passes a heparin adsorber and a dialyzer to remove the buffer. The reduction in high-molecular-weight plasma proteins achieved this way improves the rheological properties of the blood.
