You are special. You're a figure prophesized by the Great Serpent cult as kind of a herald. You have a special connection to the artifacts, which is why Barrett recruits you. The same thing gives you those psionic abilities you saw in the Direct. The artifacts kind of work like Word Walls from Skyrim, and in gameplay terms your abilities are a LOT like shouts in Skyrim.
