"I remember thinking to myself 'Does he have a lady thing with her?'," Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee laughed when he recalled how Ledger comforted the injured Williams. The accident occurred in the first scene shot for the movie. The Brokeback Mountain cast and crew were rehearsing in the snow-capped mountains of Calgary, Canada, when Lee decided they needed to shoot a scene involving Ledger and Williams racing down a hill in a toboggan. It was May and the Canadian days were heating up. Lee feared if he waited to film the scene a few weeks later he ran the risk of the natural snow on the hill melting. Ledger and Williams, who played a tormented husband and wife in Brokeback Mountain, had plenty of fun in the first couple of runs on the toboggan, but the laughter turned to tears when on the final take they fell off and Williams twisted her knee. "Michelle broke a knee ligament," Lee said. Williams could not stand up and was stricken with pain and Ledger remained by her side, comforting her. The actress was in such bad shape an ambulance was called and Ledger, who held her hand during the ordeal, insisted he ride with her. "Heath was all worked up and holding her hands and wanted to go to hospital," Lee said. That is when Lee and the rest of the film crew had their suspicions love was blossoming. The rest is Hollywood history. Despite the dramatic story-line of Brokeback Mountain in which their characters are forced to deal with Ledger's character's gay relationship with another cowboy played by Jake Gyllenhaal, Ledger and Williams have become one of Tinseltown's hottest couples. Both are expected to score Oscar nominations when they are announced next week. They also have a baby daughter, Matilda Rose, born last October. Lee joked he was hoping Ledger would bond with Gyllenhaal, not Williams in those early days on the Brokeback set. "In rehearsal, I was trying to push him towards Jake," Lee said. Gyllenhaal says he did not mind Ledger hooking up with Williams on the set. "I feel like I'm a Godfather to their child," Gyllenhaal said. "No jealousy at all."
