【转贴】Hoogie's invitation will help fast-track Sullivan Nicole Jeffery February 26, 2007 DUAL Olympic 100m freestyle champion Pieter van den Hoogenband has offered to assist Australia's new sprint hope Eamon Sullivan, by inviting him to a training camp after next month's world championships. The flying Dutchman, who is training in Geelong with his national team in preparation for the world titles, said he would welcome the opportunity to work with the 21-year-old. "I've heard about him from Michael Klim," van den Hoogenband revealed. "I have been talking to Michael about him coming over to do some training, so it would be nice if he could bring (Eamon) with him to train with me. "It would be good to train with an opponent at the start of a big career." Sullivan's coach Grant Stoelwinder was excited by the idea, saying it would benefit the Perth-based swimmer (ranked fifth in the world in the 50m freestyle) to train with the 100m world record-holder in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics. Van den Hoogenband has always regarded Australia fondly. He won his first world medal at the 1998 Perth world titles, and reached his peak at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he won the 100m and 200m freestyle and set world records in both events. He hopes Melbourne will also work its charms and deliver his first world title. Despite a stellar career at the Olympics, van den Hoogenband has never put together a winning performance at the world championships. He has won a host of silver medals, but no gold. "In Athens, Kieren Perkins made me the compliment of saying that if an Australian could not win a race, then in Australia, they will support me," he said. "If I am going to win that missing title this is the best place and best country to do it." He certainly believes he is in the shape to break through after recovering from the back surgery that ruled him out of the 2005 world titles in Montreal. "It's going to be tough to beat those guys but I am still capable of swimming fast," he warned. The Dutchman will race world 200m freestyle champion Michael Phelps of the US, whose coach Bob Bowman revealed last week that they were plotting an attempt on Ian Thorpe's world record of 1min 44.06sec. Van den Hoogenband (1:44.89) is the only other man under 1:45 but predicted neither he nor Phelps was ready to break through to 1:43. "I think Ian's world record is out of reach there," he said. "I was next to him when he set that world record and that was unbelievable. I know what it takes to swim 1:44. I think Michael Phelps can swim 1:44 but to swim 1:43 is a new level of swimming. "I think (Thorpe's) world record will stand." Van den Hoogenband is less confident of his own 100m freestyle world record of 47.84sec, set at the Sydney Olympics. "My own world record has been there for seven years and the circumstances are great in Australia (for competition) and there are some very talented swimmers around now." he said. "There's a big chance it will go. There are some guys capable of doing that. "To be honest, I don't know if I can do it here. My preparation is going well but I know what it takes to do that. It's one of my goals. I know my relay splits in Barcelona and Athens were both 46.7sec so that (converts) to 47.5sec. I know that that time is possible for me but if someone swims 47.2sec or 47.3sec, I will be in trouble." But the Dutchman is more concerned with beating 1500m champion Grant Hackett to the title of the first man to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same swimming event. "I am now in a group with Alex Popov and Johnny Weissmuller, we have won two 100m gold medals each, but starting my own group (with three gold medals) would be a dream come true," he said. He has already been to three Olympic Games but van den Hoogenband said he had never considered following his great rival Thorpe into an early retirement. "I am not swimming to get rich or more famous, I really love swimming," he said. "If you see in the morning those surfers catching that one big wave, when I am in good shape it's like catching that big wave."
Hoogenband Wins Three Titles at Dutch Nationals -- June EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, June 15. WITH the Dutch National Team for the European Championships in Budapest already selected, the Dutch Nationals were more like a training meet than real championship event. Nevertheless, the meet in the brand new pool in Eindhoven showed quite a few good races last weekend. Olympic Champion Pieter van den Hoogenband won three events, the 50 freestyle (22.70) and 100 free (49.66) and the 100 butterfly (54.25) but still needs extra speed to hold of his international competitors in Budapest in little over a month. 50m freestyle men final***********************************************************************name team st.nr. time1 Pieter vd Hoogenband PSV 78-00443 0.22.70 2 Johan Kenkhuis Swimteam 80-00755 0.22.72 3 Gijs Damen PSV 79-00255 0.23.33 4 Stefan Oosting PSV 81-01265 0.23.36 5 Robert Lijesen MNC Dordrecht 85-01579 0.23.54 6 Bas van Velthoven Swimteam 85-02695 0.23.83 7 Arjan vd Plaat MNC Dordrecht 86-02403 0.23.88 8 Michiel Punter Orca 84-01823 0.24.05 100m freestyle men final***********************************************************************name team st.nr. time 50m1 Pieter vd Hoogenband PSV 78-00443 0.49.66 0.23.79 2 Mitja Zastrow PSV 77-01249 0.49.85 0.24.42 3 Gijs Damen PSV 79-00255 0.51.25 0.24.76 4 Stefan Oosting PSV 81-01265 0.51.33 0.24.54 5 Robert Lijesen MNC Dordrecht 85-01579 0.51.84 0.24.46 6 Arjan vd Plaat MNC Dordrecht 86-02403 0.52.05 0.24.79 7 Joost Reijns Swimteam 87-02725 0.52.17 0.25.24 8 Thomas Felten PSV 83-00655 0.52.57 0.25.45 100m butterfly men final***********************************************************************name team st.nr. time 50m1 Pieter vd Hoogenband PSV 78-00443 0.54.24 0.25.12 2 Bastiaan Tamminga PSV 81-01659 0.56.22 0.25.71 3 Joran Barends DWK-XCESS 85-00091 0.56.53 0.26.17 4 Joeri Verlinden PSV 88-03549 0.57.00 0.26.67 5 Jeroen Stuut TriVia 88-03315 0.57.16 0.26.32 6 Ewoud Tamminga PSV 82-01701 0.57.34 0.26.31 7 Kevin Lebis DAW-Finenzo 81-01037 0.57.56 0.26.20 8 Nick Driebergen Swimteam 87-00793 0.58.22 0.27.00
