游戏轴心/gamesindustry.biz 03/08/2007

Chow Yun-Fat It's a pirate's life for Hong Kong's hard-boiled legend turned swashbuckler. Maxim, Jun 2007 Did you trash any hotels with Keith Richards and Johnny Depp while filming this month's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End? CYF:Nah, but we had a lot of fun. I like Johnny's work very much. As for Keith, I like the Rolling Stones, but I love the Eagles. My favorite is "Hotel California." Compared to your ultraviolent Hong Kong films, don't you think American action movies suck? CYF:There's a lot more money, technology, and script variety in Hollywood. Anything that is imagined can be created. In China we're limited in the things we can create. Maybe it's a lack of imagination, or maybe we have the imagination but don't have the funds to back it up. And our space is limited as well, so we don't have huge sound stages. Hong Kong stories are mostly about gangsters and Triads and the police. We stick to what the market wants. Now that you've been in nearly 100 movies, what's your total body count? CYF:Too many to remember. Ask John Woo. Are you and Woo the De Niro and Scorsese of Hong Kong gangster movies? CYF:Well, we do make a lot of movies together. Ever turned down a stunt because it was too extreme? CYF:It depends on the situation. I'll usually work with the stunt coordinator and try a stunt several times, and if I can't do it we rewrite it. I'm definitely not a well-trained martial arts actor like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or Jet Li. Sometimes we'll shoot what I'm able to do and have my stunt double do the rest. Would you be able to defend yourself if you were jumped on the street? CYF:No way. I'd just let them kill me. I wouldn't stop them. My reputation as a fighter is such a misunderstanding. I'm not tough-I'm actually a very soft person. I don't want to fight, because I'm too vulnerable. But you've fired two guns at once whilst flying through the air! CYF:I think the audience enjoys those sequences more than I do. I'm like a robot-like Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator. The studio pays me, and I'm there to do the job and please the audience, whether it's martial arts or shooting guns. When you pick up a script, you first have to love the character; the action is just a side dish. That's why movies can't be all fighting sequences. Like with John Wayne-his image is so powerful, and it's not just because he can ride and shoot. It's because of his heart. While doing research, we dug up a bootleg Chow Yun-Fat CD called Live in Concert. Care to defend yourself? CYF:Oh, man. That was a long time ago, and it was for charity. It was just a bunch of cocktail songs set to a dance beat. I'm definitely not a good singer. Yeah, we know. But will you master Stranglehold, the upcoming Woo-helmed video game in which your voice is featured? CYF:Not at all. I'm a computer idiot. I spend more time outside and in the mountains, surrounded by Mother Nature. Do you ever regret dropping out of school at 17? CYF:Never, because I didn't like it. I don't like to read, either. I was a wild country boy who grew up on the countryside. I didn't like the people at school. I know-I'm strange. Any Hollywood actresses you would kill to work with? CYF:Jennifer Lopez, because she's very sexy. If I wanted to make a movie with her, it wouldn't be easy, because there are very few roles in the U.S. for Asian actors. I'll have to wait for fate to intervene. Are there any foods in the States you can't live without? CYF:Central Park pushcart hot dogs. I can eat three at once. The L.A. Times called you the "coolest actor in the world" before you made your first Hollywood movie. Do you think you've lived up to the hype? CYF:That comment was completely over the top. I'm still learning, guys-don't listen to them. Even though I'm a veteran actor in Hong Kong, I'm still just a rookie when it comes to Hollywood.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's EndIn a sense, the two "Pirates" sequels feel less like movies than a shared event -- much like a concert where the audience sits patiently through lesser known numbers to hear the band belt out favorite tunes. A similar phenomenon occurs during the arid stretches (and there are several) in this sprawling, messy adventure, to be endured until Johnny Depp does something flamboyantly amusing or a new face like Keith Richards or Chow Yun-fat graces the screen. The notion of "Pirates" as, foremost, a consumer product came through loud and clear in the current Entertainment Weekly, in which director Gore Verbinski referred to the screwy process of shooting the second and much of the third movie simultaneously as "How Not to Make a Film 101."At one point, when a character asks of Depp's loopy Capt. Jack Sparrow, "Do you think he plans it out or just makes it up as he goes along?," it's hard not to wonder if Verbinski and his writing collaborators, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, aren't slipping in a sly comment about the film itself.Whatever quaint underpinnings there were to the class-divided romance between Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) have dissipated in the journey since the 2003 original, as their relationship goes through a series of fits, starts and betrayals -- all in this movie alone.Picking up where the second left off (though a refresher course wouldn't hurt), the couple and Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) begin in Singapore, where they and their pirate mates hope to liberate Jack from Davy Jones' Locker, a surreal realm between purgatory and hell. A lengthy battle ensues before the too-long quest to find Jack leads to a colorful international assembly of pirates at Shipwreck City, with the East India Trading Co.'s hissable nobleman Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) in hot pursuit and a final showdown inevitable. That questions of life and death are somewhat fungible here helps mitigate the high level of carnage, which includes a mass hanging sequence at the outset, as Beckett wages a reign of terror in seeking to bring the pirates to heel.Beckett's arsenal also features the Flying Dutchman, the seemingly indestructible ghost ship captained by Davy Jones (Bill Nighy, seen fleetingly outside of his way-cool octopus visage). But can Will, Elizabeth and Jack defeat Jones and Beckett -- and unfetter Will's dad (Stellan Skarsgard), a barnacle-encrusted soul under Jones' spell -- without sacrificing someone on their side, given that slaying Jones requires that somebody take his place aboard the doomed vessel? For the most part, those big themes and even the fundamental rules are easily obscured by the cacophony of relentless, state-of-the-art special effects and Hans Zimmer's equally unremitting score, which at times overwhelms the dialogue. Indeed, repetitive action from multiple cannon-firing battles to ship-sucking vortexes yield diminishing returns; the pic's greatest virtue is its sense of whimsy, whether that involves multiple Depps debating himself or the crew's slapstick antics, which wring considerable mileage out of that monkey and parrot.Depp's fey, morally challenged buccaneer remains a kick and the pic's biggest asset, whereas the now-butt-kicking Elizabeth and conflicted Will -- however dreamy -- have grown tiresome, especially when saddled with stirring, Errol Flynn-style "Avast, me hearties!" interludes
Movie review: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'By Michael Wilmington "Pirates of the Caribbean" has had quite a ride, and I wouldn't bet that it's over, despite the seeming finality of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the most visually spectacular, action-packed and surreal of the adventures of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). The movie begins with a terrifying image: a line of pirates and their accused confederates, shuffling on chained feet to the gallows, with a narrator citing an all-too-modern-sounding list of suspended rights. But this is no message movie. Soon we're on another wild ride from the tropics to the frozen wastes, as we pick up what happened since we last saw Jack in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (pulled into the deep in the clutches of a kraken) and follow the last battles between the free-roaming pirates and their allies against their nemeses from the East India Co., along with the final resolution of the contentious romance between Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). The capper to 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and 2006's "Dead Man's Chest" was actually shot concurrently with the second (not incidentally, the third-highest international grosser of all time), and when they say "World's End," they're not kidding. The movie plunges us down to Davy Jones' locker, then hurls us into a series of violent voyages and confrontations in arctic wastes, South Sea isles and galleon-shredding gales, with Sparrow, the beauteous Swann, her sword-swain Turner and Sparrow's glibly treacherous rival captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) clashing with their deadly 18th Century pursuers, led by the smugly murderous Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander). Also in the fray: the pirates of the Singapore led by Chow Yun-Fat as the ill-tempered Capt. Sao Feng, and, aboard the Flying Dutchman, Beckett's enforcer, relentless Davy Jones himself (Bill Nighy, still sprouting tentacles and face glop). By the time of the film's climactic fight, everyone left alive is being hurled around by a full-scale sea battle, waged in what seems a near-typhoon, with everyone slashing away like Errol Flynn on amphetamines. As advertised, Rolling Stone Keith Richards shows up at a pirate conference as the keeper of the pirate code, even strumming a tune on a period guitar. (It wasn't "You Got the Silver," but then, he doesn't fall out of a coconut tree here either.)The movie is almost too much. Director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have packed "World's End" with so much explosive action, opulent decor and surreal scenes of mayhem and madness -- including a mass crab-and-ship exodus, an apocalyptic-looking waterfall and life-size and miniature hallucinatory clones of Capt. Jack, some capering around Depp's mane and shoulder -- that sometimes it's overwhelming. This sequel is frenziedly imaginative, where the first "Pirates" was sunny, fey and friendly (like Sparrow) and the second a rollicking romp.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's EndThe first Pirates of the Caribbean was long and sometimes tedious but it had the advantage of being funny - at least when Captain Jack Sparrow was waving his arms and stumbling around like a drunken sailor, which indeed, he was.Johnny Depp's characterisation of the pirate as rock star, basing his performance on the shipwrecked grandeur of Keith Richards, was inspired and beguiling. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom added a delicate upper-crust English beauty to balance the scales and form a love triangle. In order to have fights, they needed someone to hold the other sword and that was Geoffrey Rush, as Captain Barbossa, the ghost with the worst dental hygiene on the Spanish Main (but the biggest hat). When the dialogue reached an exhausted impasse - and that was often - Barbossa and his band of scurvy cut-throat ghosts would steal the ship, start a fight, strand somebody on an island or, if necessary, turn upon each other. Director Gore Verbinski kept this up for 143 minutes, some kind of bum-numbing record for a comedy. The huge success of the first movie meant that the second and third sequel were shot back to back. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer saved millions in sets and staff and was able to get both movies out just 10 months apart. Given that Dead Man's Chest made twice as much money as the original, he's hoping that At World's End will bring home a third mountain of treasure. It will make a squillion but the truth is it's not very good. The faults of the first movie are still there, only more so, and it doesn't have the benefit of being fresh. At 168 minutes, it's also longer than either of its brothers, which is just ridiculous. Never mind the quality, feel the length. Worse still, the plot is incoherent and half the movie seems to be taken up with static scenes where the characters try to explain it or complicate it with yet another revelation. It's really a continuation of the second film, rather than a new movie, so if you missed Dead Man's Chest it's even harder to follow.
Would you book passage on a doomed ship if you knew Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom would be along for the ride? Millions of moviegoers will say "yes" and climb aboard for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, the conclusion of Disney's pirate trilogy. Some will even go in hats, dreadlocks, and heavy eyeliner, cheering for their favorite scallywags. And they'll reward director Gore Verbinski and company with enough treasure to fund another whole franchise. But that may be fool's gold they're spending. Not even a dozen Captain Jack Sparrows can save this overstuffed ship from sinking. If less really is more, Verbinski must have missed the memo. (In last summer's Dead Man's Chest, he proved that excess can be a good thing; it's hard to have too much fun with slapstick sequences as inspired as those. But here, it's just chaotic action, a lot of shooting and swordplay without character development to give it gravity.) If you choose to join this rowdy cruise, plan to purchase a couple of meals' worth of popcorn and soda. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End packs more characters, more action, more surprises, and more metaphysical nonsense into 168 minutes—yes, that's right, almost three hours—than most adventure trilogies contain in their whole series. (I know, I recently said the same thing about Spider-Man 3. But trust me: At World's End makes that movie look as simple as a Saturday morning cartoon.) And you'll have to sit through twelve minutes of closing credits to see the movie's predictable epilogue. But most moviegoers will have already walked the plank, emerging seasick, full of strange tales, and drunk on plot-twists, double-crosses, and baffling revelations.
About seven hours into Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, someone stuffs a monkey into a cannon, lights the fuse and sends it shooting across the deck to crash into another character. That monkey is like us, the audience -- bruised, confused and unsure what it did to deserve this punishment. We have to endure a hurricane of hooey, a hydra-headed story with more subplots and pointless reversals than a Raymond Chandler tale and more doodad MacGuffins -- a compass that points to this, a key that unlocks that -- than even a parody could endure, all of which leads to a sort of white noise of confusion where a plot should be. Even if that monkey-cannon were pointed at my head, I couldn't explain to you why, for example, the key pirates from the previous two films are now introduced to us as 'pirate lords' -- leaders of some kind of pirate's union, which, judging by Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) does not offer dental. It's their lordship, and what that means for pirates everywhere, that this trilogy capper is supposedly about. You'll remember that at the end of the last film, Dead Man's Chest, Depp's swishy swashbuckler was betrayed by Keira Knightley's colonial babe Elizabeth Swann, left manacled to the deck of his ship as it was being eaten by a steroid-squid, in the hopes that a sticky pirate curse would drown with him and his ship. The audience wasn't fooled -- even the most casual moviegoer knew Depp would be returning for part three -- but films that include an easy-breezy transition between life and afterlife often find themselves having to paddle twice as hard to get dramatic tension going, which is one of the problems that most plagues At World's End. After all, if no one can really die, what's the worst thing that can happen? (One of the reasons I've never bothered to read a comic book in my life, by the way) Somewhere around the thirty-minute mark of this one, we're re-introduced to Captain Jack, who is stuck in some kind of Looney Tunes purgatory, commanding a ship sitting in the middle of a desert, and crewed only by multiple Jack Sparrows. Before that can happen, however, we're whisked away to the land of Singapore, where Elizabeth Swann and Barbossa are improbably on some kind of stealth mission to enlist the help of Chow Yun-Fat in the whole scheme to free Sparrow from his afterlife prison. I can't imagine who thought it was a good idea to have Yun-Fat in this film, and I'm sure he would agree with me -- his scenes accomplish absolutely nothing except to pad the running time of the film an extra twenty minutes or so, and culminate in a bizarre set-up where he thinks that Knightley's character, wearing a triangle hat, is some kind of reincarnation of a goddess and tries to rape her. Don't ask. By the time the 'let's bring back Jack from the dead' part of the film is over, you're sort of hoping that things might get on the right track and liven up, but you're only kidding yourself -- that's when the real complications begin. Maps, keys to help read maps, and maps to help find keys, and so forth.
Movie review: Third 'Pirates' is too long and convoluted, but visually impressive and funThe Associated PressPublished: May 24, 2007NEW YORK: It's way too long and massively convoluted and ultimately just plain silly. But still, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is a lot of fun a lot of the time. The third movie in the freakishly successful "Pirates" franchise feels substantial and looks impressive and fulfills the hype surrounding it in a way the other thirds — Spidey and Shrek — haven't so far.Having said that, it is, of course, a giant meandering mess that leaves you feeling as if you've been tossed about on the high seas for three hours, but theoretically that's also part of the allure of these movies. Director Gore Verbinski and writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio return with even bigger helpings of special effects, including an interminable climax in which the Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman battle each other in the driving rain while circling along the edge of a swirling, sucking maelstrom. And yet, within such sequences, there are enough individual "wow" moments that make you appreciate just how inventive and complicated an achievement this was. Stuff gets blown up (this is a Jerry Bruckheimer production, after all) and it looks like real stuff really getting blown up, not just digital blips that have been manipulated by hundreds of people sitting in the dark in front of computer screens. Though CGI technology clearly was used often, "At World's End" never appears fakey-cartoony, like so many of these epics often do.For better and for worse, the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" actually resembles the Disney amusement park ride that inspired the series more than its predecessors (with traces of the "It's a Small World" ride thrown in for good measure), especially when characters are cruising through some waterway, singing some rousing yo-ho song. You're constantly aware that what you're watching is a manufactured vision of what heroes and ruffians are supposed to do and say, and yet the kid in you wants to give in, then go for a $5 (€4) cotton candy afterward
Empire ReviewIt’s a central irony in the Pirates movies that a profession most generally associated with scum, villainy and other unpleasantries is painted as a heroic career for free-spirits and the righteously rebellious. For the most part, these pirates get up to little more than high jinks – picking a pocket or two, bar-brawling when the occasion presents itself – and haven’t been presented as real thieves or marauders since the supernaturally assisted attack on Port Royal in the first film. But while the pirates may still appear like lovable scamps in this third assault on world box-office records, the demands of this plot mean that they’re so concerned with keeping up the momentum that almost no time is devoted to actual, y’know, fun. The plot is – well, your guess is as good as ours. There’s much sailing to and fro; something about a magical navigation chart, presumably to match Jack’s magical compass; lots of crosses, double-crosses, triple-crosses and so-many-crosses-it’s-basically-a-porcupine; and mini story arcs for even the most minor characters. We are pretty sure that Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) are having difficulties, that Cap’n Jack (Johnny Depp) is having hallucinations, and that Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) is using Davy Jones’ (Bill Nighy) heart to control the seas and stamp out piracy. But what, precisely, new Singaporean pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) and voodoo priestess Tia (Naomie Harris) are up to is anyone’s guess, and as the betrayals and treachery mount (every major character betrays someone, with the possible exception of the monkey), it becomes impossible to keep track of anyone’s motivation. But if you can just let the story wash past you, and stop trying to catch the expositionary dialogue as it flits past in a variety of syrupy brogues (not helped by the over-loud sound mix), there is still some fun to be had. Sure, Knightley appears to have started Botox treatment two decades before the Hollywood norm, so expressionless are her perfect features, while Bloom struggles to make any impact with a character who’s gone from pleasantly (if boringly) heroic to confused and confusing. But Johnny still saves the day, hamming it up and zinging lines off Rush’s always fun Barbossa and, in particular, Keith Richards’ surprisingly accomplished turn as Captain Teague. The hallucinatory early scenes in Davy Jones’ locker, where we see the Pearl crewed entirely by multiple Cap’n Jacks, show Depp clearly having a ball, and if later visionary forays are less successful (the ‘good Jack’ and ‘bad Jack’ on his shoulders are a step too far) he still eats up the screen every minute he’s on it.
Third 'Pirates' long on spectacle, short on sense The third 'Pirates of the Caribbean' has plenty of . . . By Carina Chocano, Times Staff Writer May 23, 2007 IT'S possible that someone, somewhere, has put together a flowchart or diagram tracking the many plots, subplots, digressions, divagations and flights of whimsy in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which, depending on your tolerance for Byzantine complication for complication's sake, might have been alternately titled "At Wit's End." The third in a series that appears to be hinting at immortality in more ways than one, "Pirates 3" demands intimate knowledge of the first two installments, not to mention a sterling memory and attention span. In other words, it pays to be prepared. Seriously, this thing is a stern master — walk in casually off the street and you risk nearly three hours of very high-octane confusion. For the diligent and the faithful, however, director Gore Verbinski and screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, laboring under the bombastic tutelage of Jerry Bruckheimer, have assembled another collection of exciting set-pieces with bellowed dialogue in between. Exciting, distracting and quite possibly permanently concentration impairing, what "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" offers is a wonderfully scenic medley of impressive action sequences so lengthy, elaborate and numerous that remembering what came before becomes a kind of test of mental focus. Me, I failed it, but then, my concentration is shot. If the following plot summary sounds clear and well-ordered, I should probably mention that I consulted secondary materials to help me make sense of what I'd just seen. Any ensuing clarity, in other words, shouldn't be taken as a reflection of my addled viewing experience. At the beginning of the film, Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), chairman of the East India Trading Co., has imposed martial law, suspended habeas corpus and begun rounding up suspected insurgents — or rather, pirates — and systematically hanging them regardless of sex, age or the condition of their teeth. Those who remember the end of the last film will recall that when we last left our growing cast of heroes, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and the crew of the Black Pearl were hiding out with the witch Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), who brought Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) back from the dead in order to lead the crew in the rescue of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who, when we last saw him, was being swallowed by an adipose sea monster called the kraken. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Elizabeth, Will and Capt. Barbossa have traveled to Singapore to steal a navigational chart from the Chinese pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Some intra-buccaneerial fighting ensues, but it eventually becomes apparent that they must band together with the other lords of the pirate clans to defeat Beckett and Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), whose heart Beckett now possesses. It's nearly an hour before we lay eyes on Jack Sparrow, marooned on the desert island that is Davy Jones' locker, confronting various doppelgängers and muttering to himself about nosy rocks. Until now, the movie has had a stewy quality — the baroque art direction is impressive but oppressive after a while, and it's hard to see or breathe. Jack's minimalist introduction on a sun-drenched patch of sand is a respite that immediately perks things up.
