Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantagesclaimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products arenow being debated. Advocates of organic foods-a term whose meaning variesgreatly-frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritiousthan others. The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritionalquality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claimsthat the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs.Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, thepreponderance of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult forthe general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims thateating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or curesdisease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized andform the basis for folklore.
A further inference was drawn by Pascal, who reasoned that if this “sea of air” existed, its pressure at the bottom(i.e. sea level) would be greater than its pressure further up, and thattherefore the height of mercury column would decrease in proportion to theheight above sea-level. There is also the danger of more people knowing things we would like to keep private. The more information is stored in computer, the greater the possibility of it being misused or accessed by the wrong people. 【解析】英语被动句式,如“be used”,“are processed”,“be affected”,“is required”,“are rarely convicted”,大都汉译成了主动式,如“用”、“转账”、“取代”、“受到影响”、“需要”、“很难定罪”;个别的译成了“被”字句也是可接受的,如“being misused or accessed”“被无关的人盗用或攫取”;根据语境汉译时对英语句式进行了调整,如“There is also the danger ofmore people knowing things we would like to keep private ”“人们希望秘而不宣的隐私也将遇到被较多的人探测出来的危险”。
For the gentleman-in-waiting, virtue consisted above all in grace and style, in doing well what was appropriate to his position; education was merely a way of acquiring polish. And vice was manifested in gracelessness, awkwardness, in behaving inappropriately, discourteously, or ostentatiously. For the apprentice, however, virtue was evidenced in success through hard work. The requisite qualities of character were not grace or style, but drive, determination, and a sharp eye for opportunity. While casual liberality and even prodigality characterized thegentleman, frugality, thrift, and self-control came to distinguish the new apprentice. And while the gentleman did not aspire to a higher station because his station was already high, the apprentice was continually becoming, striving, struggling upward. Failure for the apprentice meant standing still, not rising. 1.For the gentleman-in-waiting, virtue consisted above all in grace and style, in doing well what was appropriate to his position; 对于那些准绅士来说,美德首先包括高雅的风度和作风,及符合自己身份地位的表现; 解析:above all 是插入语;跳过就好:consisted in ... 2.education was merely a way of acquiringpolish. 3.And vice was manifested in gracelessness, awkwardness, in behaving inappropriately, discourteously, or ostentatiously. 4.For the apprentice, however, virtue was evidenced in success through hard work. 5.The requisite qualities of character were not grace or style, but drive, determination, and a sharp eye for opportunity.
Yet the BBC will have to change, because the broadcasting world around it is changing. The commercial TV channels — ITV and Channel 4 — were required by the Thatcher Government's Broadcasting Act to become more commercial, competing with each other for advertisers, and cutting costs and jobs. But it is the arrival of new satellite channels — funded partly by advertising and partly by viewers' subscriptions — which will bring about the biggest changes in the long term. 58. The foremost reason why the BBC has to readjust itself is no other than ________. Some music has always been about the performance. Watching a rock band live, for example, is not just a matter of appreciating the quality of the sound. What the musicians get up to on stage is almost as important. But you might think that classical music would be immune from such distractions—doubly so when a performance is being judged as part of a competition. However, a study by Chia-Jung Tsay, a concert pianist who is also a researcher at University College,London, suggests that even judges awarding prizes can be swayed by what they see aswell as what they hear. Dr Tsay’s study, just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(NAS), employed over 1,000 volunteers (half novices and halfexperts) to evaluate the performances of candidates in ten prestigious musiccompetitions, to see if they agreed with the judges’ decisions. Each volunteerassessed 30 performances—the top three from each competition. The catch wasthat only a third of volunteers were shown the performances accompanied by thesoundtrack. The other two-thirds got either to see each performance or to hearit, but not both. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? (A) The soundtrack of music competition can be assessed by NAS. (B) Volunteers without any experience are competing with expertise ones. (C) The performance of the music exerts certain influence on judges. (D) The top three of 30 performances are evaluated by volunteers. 题型识别:段落推理题 思路解析:回文定位 第一段最后一句: a study suggests that even judges awarding prizes can be swayed by what they see aswell as what they hear.
