Ilia Kulik strives to keep the artistry in figure skating By Misha Berson 西雅图时报剧评家 "I like to experiment," says Ilia Kulik. At KeyArena Saturday he will perform to a contemporary gospel song, "Song for the King," and to "16 Tons." It was almost exactly 11 years ago when the sleek, young Russian figure skater Ilia Kulik took the ice at the Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. With athletic power, balletic grace and a seamless quadruple jump, the rookie glided and whirled his way to an Olympic gold medal. Kulik was only 20 during that 1998 victory, and he became an instant fan heartthrob. But instead of defending his title at the next Winter Olympics, the blond, boyish and determined Kulik quickly went "pro" to join the touring Stars on Ice show. Soon after grabbing the gold, Kulik made another big leap. He met fellow skater Ekaterina Gordeeva on tour, reportedly wooing her with original songs and poems. (Gordeeva's first husband and skating partner, Sergei Grinkov, died suddenly in 1995.) Today, despite his still-boyish look, Kulik is a settled husband and dad, living in Southern California and raising two daughters with Gordeeva (young Liza, and the teenage Daria, who was fathered by Grinkov). But fans can be glad he's still a dynamo on ice, and a creative, adventurous performer. (Last year he composed and performed the music for one of his Stars on Ice routines.) By phone from the road, Kulik chatted about his own artistry and keen interest in skaters of the future. Q: Since going pro, you've devised so many fresh, offbeat skating routines. You've even juggled a hat in one. A: I like to experiment. The hat routine was choreographed by Christopher Dean [of Olympic ice-dancing duo Torvill and Dean]. All the best choreographers bring a lot to the table and look for something new. He [Dean] is always pushing skating forward. Q: What solo numbers will you perform at the Key? A: One is a piece to "Song for the King," with piano music. It's by Christian songwriter-singer Michael W. Smith. The other is to the old song "16 Tons." I'm adding in a little bit of Broadway-style show dancing on that one. Q: You're 31, and your multiple jumps are still superb. Does it get harder doing them? How do you train? A: It's an everyday commitment. You don't want to miss a practice. You eat well, sleep well, live healthy. But yes, it gets a little more difficult each year. You can't keep up the hard training schedule you do for competition, but off the ice I play tennis a lot, which keeps me in shape. Q: Do you think the artistry is going out of competitive skating, because of changes in scoring, and the pressure to do bigger and bigger jumps? A: I don't think the art will ever disappear. It just personally depends on the skaters. If you look at last year's world champion, Jeffrey Buttle, he's very artistic. [Buttle has since joined Stars on Ice as a guest performer and is part of the KeyArena cast.] Q: Your wife, Ekaterina, is still a lovely skater and active performer. What about your kids? A: My younger one, Liza, she is skating and looks like she's enjoying it. She's doing her first couple of competitions, just feeling it out. But Daria told us she had enough of skating. She's busy with high school. Q: Do you teach skating? A: I do seminars, I work with skating clubs, with skating camps in Connecticut and Switzerland. Q: Would you want to coach a skater at the Olympics? A: It's really a possibility. I love working with high-level skaters. It's always exciting to share, and work with the best. And the moves they do these days ... it's unbelievable!

。。。 VICTOR KUDRIATSEV Victor Kudrjavtsev – maker of stars. Translation of an article by Irina Stepantseva and Asia Alimova published in the Russian Language Publication “Moskovsky Komsomolets” on October 24, 2007. Today a famous coach of figure skaters marks his seventieth birthday. He is some kind of an unusual genius coach. He never talks about his achievements; he does not look down on people. He never needles his colleagues. It is only work and results for him. He is very talented and modestly charming. One would be surprised, but THE unique Ludmila Pachomova began her career with him as a singles skater. In his first group, he had also the first male singles champion Sergey Volkov. He also coached the pair of Smirnova-Surajkin. There are a lot of famous and talented pupils of Victor Kudrjavtsev. He generously guided them into the sports life, sometimes not even getting any credit for their successes. He taught Kira Ivanova to jump, but she reached the Olympic pedestal with a Kovalev. Ilja Kulik won with Kudrjavtsev the European Championship, but won the Olympics at Nagano with Tarasova. Maria Butirskaya went to conquer the world with Chaikovskaja. How does one count the medals of this coach? He counted them 108 - received at the Championships of Russia, Europe, World and Olympics. Any one could challenge that count if they want to, but who would dare? He is a technical genius – it is a well know fact. Some felt pity for him, some felt that he had bad karma – as soon as he would bring up a student who would feel the strong “wings”, they would replace Kudrjavtsev as a coach. Why would the students leave him after he helped them to discover figure skating? May be it was because he treated everyone equal and some felt that he did not give them special attention? Or maybe because greatness is better seen from afar and it is much harder to go back than to keep moving forward. Victor used to say: “What can one do, I do not like diplomacy. I always had some strong pupils in my groups and if I would pay more attention to one, the others would be upset”. It was not really that important why the pupils would go away – he never panicked. If the talent went to someone else, what could he do? Of course no one likes treachery, but he always had more pupils to work with. He even defends the ones who left him saying that they had their right to choose. He likes to work with novices – with the raw material, and to be patient. What he can not justify is the gossip about him and his students. But if the coaches to whom his pupils would go would respect him, and would ask him for advice, he would be happy to help. He helped Tarasova work with Kulik. Victor likes talented people, not the ones who would waste their talent, but the ones who work to grow their talent. He always felt that if the skaters would not follow his instructions, it was a waste of his time and he was not going to hold their hands. They had to work hard by themselves as to improve their performance. His job is to give them the skating skills. In his view, a champion is a sports person who has some specific qualities – physical, psychological and moral. A champion should be able to make the right decision without a coach. It is impossible to teach a person to compete. He either has this quality or not. And one should not exaggerate the role of the coach at this stage. It was always hard to be a coach. The parents were always difficult to deal with, but these days the main thing that they think about is not the sports or art, but the pocket book. This is one thing that Victor would cut down immediately – the interference of the parents in the practice. Many think that if they pay for the training, they can do anything. Kudrjavtsev is not complaining because he has the most important thing for a coach – his private ice that he works on. It is unusual even for such a famous coach as Kudrjavtsev. He has groups that he coaches for money and the others are just for sports. He has a staff of coaches who work under his supervision and by his methods. He can teach people to jump as no one can. He consults and teaches other coaches. He continues to coach the members of the National Team. And that is how he meets his seventieth birthday. If you ask him about his age he would tell you that there are many people older than he who like to talk and have something interesting to talk about. He would not want to make himself as an example; he would rather concentrate on his work.

Liza started studying and competing in Russia 阿姨杂志访谈里的消息: “She started studying in a Moscow school on the 1 of September. Though Liza is only 7, she studies in the 2nd grade. She had a test here and passed it without problems. For Liza it's easier to study in a school in Russia as in America she sometimes visited russian school and at home we speak only Russian. - Does she skate? - Yes, she does. She started skating at the age of 3,5. I trained her myself in the USA but in Moscow she skates at CSKA where I grew up. Elena Vodorezova recommended me a good coach - Inna Germanovna. In the USA Liza was the best in her group but here there are some girls who excel Liza in skating. I believe it's good for her to know that there is a long way to perfection. In the USA Liza was the best in her group。 Yesterday I saw Katia and Liza at one of the Moscow ice-rinks, they came there to compete. It was sort of unexpected, we came out of the lockerroom and practically were nose to nose. Liza came to compete for Junior 2 level, she wore a nice hot pink dress with a big violin on the back. Katia came in wearing blue ripped jeans, blue sweater, black leather jacket, and had her hair in a small brade. The haircolor was actually nice, kind of sand color highlights which looked good on her rather tan skin (tanning salon perhaps?)). They also had with them a young man (perhaps a driver), at one point he went to get a tea for Liza. From my obsevations Liza is a very strong skater, she has powerful legs ...very high speed and high jumps. I don't know the final results, but I do have her dance on the video, as well of Katia coaching her before the dance and comforting her after the dance (Liza fell on one jump) and was a bit upset, but by the middle of the next girl's dance was ok and watching. It was very sweet to observe the two as they were preparing in the lockerroom and near the ice. It seems like Liza is very calm and serious (perhaps focused), and Katia is very helpful and supportive, always has a quick warm smile for Liza.

1997My first time of seeing Tarasova immersed in home life was in Marlborough, where she trained Ilia Kulik before hte Olympics. Klimova and Ponomarenko were rooming with her, friends came over from NYC all the time, the family of another great coach Ed Pliner lived nearby, and Kulik came over for meals three times a day from his house across the street. Everyone took turns cooking and cleaning. Tarasova's all-consuming caring of Kulik who was at the center of her world at the time went surprisingly well along with her will of steel toward anything related to work and schedule. One evening I started interviewing Kulik and we went at it for an hour and a half. In the middle of the conversation, Tarasova burst in, "you said you only need 30 minutes! Ilia, go to bed immediately! Immediately!"The next day I tried to avoid her. I think Kulik felt the same way. He was unusually quiet, cooperative and ate next to nothing at dinner as he sneaked off to have his rest. The next day, Tarasova went to NYC for a TV interview. She called me at 1 a.m. "Sorry for calling so late but I know you never go to bed before 2 am. Ilushka didn't eat his soup today. Be a love, defrost some chicken from the fridge, we'll make some chicken broth for him."THat brief visit became another lesson for me. Help if you can. But mostly, don't interrupt, don't create any problems. Because their time at the path to the summit is scheduled down to the minute. FIve years later, I found myself at another Tarasova house in Simsbury. The skaters were different, but the air was full of the same kind of caring, and all kinds of information was absorbed without even noticing."Add a raw tomato to your broth in addition to the onion. The tomato will absorb all elements of the meat we don't need. We'll make some fish by sauteing in olive oil and a bit of lemon juice for five minutes. Vitalik! Stop pushing your food around. If I had the time, I would tell you in full detail why you need this exact type of food to practice well. But I don't. So be so good as to take my word for it, eat your food quickly, and go to bed."FOr a while, I couldn't understand why so many of her students break off all ties as soon as the work is over despite the overwhelming care by the coach who is trying to predict every step and satisfy every whimsy. ALthough that's probably not surprising. Round-the-clock supervision and the need to meet the impossibly high standards every minute can be tiring more than the most difficult of practices. Sometimes, though, the opposite happens. People who are used to the feeling of the favorites, the only ones, couldn't understand why the coach would lose all interest once the results are accomplished. THat happened a lot, both in sports and ice shows. However, when I tried to delicately broach the subject (I though so, anyway), Tarasova understood me at once, and interrupted me brusquely, "I am no nanny! I give them a profession for a lifetime. I try to teach them what I know. Their life afterwards is up to them!"

Ilia Kulik the story of talent
