A.I - it’s all about human connection.
I grew up with music around me. My father played the double bass, a very physically demanding instrument. He has the hands and a proclivity to remain stationary to prove it. It filled our home with music every day. At the same time as I discovered music, I discovered the names of the composers behind this music. It was all written and performed by these larger than life human beings who had spent all their waking hours living and breathing music. They quickly became my role models and my greatest sources of inspiration in this world.
The connection between the music and myself was human. It was the sensation that this music was written for us, by us. Everything from the notes on paper to the hundred piece orchestra of incredible musicians played a role, and every element was human. These were my childhood heroes. I almost felt I knew them. Like we spoke the same language and shared a common understanding.
I, like many creatives here, have been curious and tried using A.I a few times. If regarded as another tool in the toolbox it may be useful for some things but I wholeheartedly intend to continue on my path which involves working with real musicians, singers, instrumentalists, real graphics artists, visual effects artists and a real audience. That’s where the real joy lies for me.
There is a lot of talk about how A.I cannot replace real art, and that ultimately we need that human connection to find value in things.
I think that is true, but I would take it a step further and say that to be human means being aware that we are all imperfect, and it is this vulnerability that makes life so valuable and special. It is this imperfection that permeates everything we do, and we need heroes to look up to and guide the way. Super humans for me are the amazing legendary composers of the past who are proof that not all progress is necessarily good progress, and it isn’t a given that all knowledge and wisdom is shared and improved upon.

Sometimes things are lost.
When I, at a ripe age of 13 put on my headphones and closed my eyes to the unbelievable beauty of Gustav Mahler's Adagio from his 5th symphony my mind was filled with images of an orchestra with all these incredible human beings contributing their heart and soul to the music. I imagined the conductor keeping pace and the violinists delicately laying down each note with utmost care and love.
The instruments, the performances, the knowledge, experience and skill all came from humans. The music, arguably from the gods. The result was a deep sense of connection and comfort. Comfort that someone out there understands what it means to love as a human. As if they were given a little sneak peak behind the scenes of the universe, and shared it with us. It made me feel like everything is going to be alright.
Music is pure expression of humanity, it isn't a competition. No matter what level you are at, the tactile experience of playing an instrument, singing a song, or composing a piece that reflects your state of mind, the joy is in sharing, in performing together, in growing as a person, in celebrating creativity, in dancing, laughing, crying and relating to each other at all levels.
When I pick up my violin and hold it against my shoulder I can smell the varnish, feel the instrument vibrating and resonating with my body, every motion of my hands and fingers reminding me that I am blessed to be able to experience a miracle that is the symphony of sound, scent, feeling and visual beauty of something humans so perfectly crafted from barely anything but a piece of wood. The fact that the violin has remained largely unchanged for 100+ years tells me that if anything, the age of computers and technology has distracted us from the most important aspect of being human - our connection with nature.

And this is what music is. It is a deep form of personal expression. I play the violin with great joy despite there being zero chance for me to ever get anywhere close to the technical proficiency of the great violinists of our time, and certainly despite the fact that a computer can easily create a flawless violin performance. I make art despite the fact that there are millions of artists way better than me, and A.I that can create any piece of art in seconds. I write a type of music despite there being music out there that is far more popular, accessible and surely much better than what I am capable of. Why?
Because I love it. Because I truly love the process. The sharing, the tactile magic, the sense of accomplishment, the feeling of having a connection so deeply human yet strangely divine at the same time, that it makes the hairs stand up on my arm. All because I had and still have heroes whom without there would be no music.
Back in the days when I was 10 years old we had computers that could easily beat anyone in Chess. 30 years later Chess is more popular than ever. And that's a competitive sport. Music isn't even a competition, so A.I is even less of a threat in that sense.
Of course being a composer by profession in an era of A.I may prove challenging, but to be fair I think that has always been the case, and if you're preoccupied with making money you're possibly better off as a banker or something else anyway.

I write this fully aware that it may age poorly, but I stand by my commentary as a tribute to the great feats of musical divinity passed on to us from our great ancestors. If we let the entirety of singular skill sets from luthiers, orchestrators, master instrumentalists and vocalists, conductors, composers and such die out of laziness as A.I effortlessly mimics our work to general satisfaction, then we will possibly reach a point at which these traditions and skills are lost, and we'll marvel at our past achievements like priceless relics confined to an eternity of worthless digital zeroes and ones. Oh what we would have done to witness an orchestra performing..
I believe it is our responsibility to ensure that the spirit of creativity lives on in everything we do, and that we teach our children that life is not a race, nor a competition or about money and fame, but rather about experiencing love with all the senses we have been blessed with because as long as we are human, this is what we all have in common.
