Super sleuth Benedict Cumberbatch will be on the trail of some intriguing architecture later this month when he launches a night hike through the city in support of a Hammersmith cancer caring centre.
The Sherlock star arrived at Maggie's Centre at Charing Cross Hospital this morning to promote the arduous 10 or 20 mile fundraising hike, which will take place during the Open House London weekend on September 17.
The circular expedition begins at the Guildhall in central London and takes in the Channel 4 building in Westminster, the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, the Serpentine Pavilion in Hyde Park and several other architectural gems – including a pit stop at Maggie's for tea and a brownie.
It is hoped the march will raise thousands for the centre, which offers a calm, relaxing and informal sanctuary to people who have been diagnosed with cancer, and which often sees more than 100 people pass through its doors each day.
Benedict said: "As someone who was born and bred here I have a deep love of London and I am constantly amazed that I am still discovering fascinating buildings, streets and hidden corners in this outstanding city.
"To combine walking, architectural discovery and philanthropy in one event is quite unique and I am delighted to be the person that will start this extraordinary event off."
A group of women currently being treated for cancer, who have found vital support through Maggie's, will be joined by thousands of others for the 10 hour night hike.
Sam Phillips, 37, who works as an accountant in Hammersmith and was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, said: "Working nearby and going to hospital here means I can come to Maggie's on my way back and have a drink and a chat. It's been very useful for me.
"it's just such a nice place – there's a feeling of calm when you walk through the door, and it's really well designed."
Fellow patient Piia Anteroinen, who first visited Maggie's last year after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said: "When I first walked into the building I totally fell in love with it.
"I'm from Finland and there's a lot of Finnish design in here. It's so warm and welcoming and the staff have given me lots of advice."
