The petrol bomb is nothing more than fragile container filled with flammable liquid and tied to an ignition source. The classic form is a glass bottle filled with petrol and tied off with a petrol soaked rag. They first appeared during the Spanish Civil War, and would go on to see widespread use in WW2 and beyond. They were first and foremost an anti-tank weapon, relying on the smoke and burning fuel to choke out the engine or crew. The smaller pre war tanks that dominated the early war years were especially vulnerable to this, especially if their engine air intakes could be directly hit.
