The outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic in 2019 has significantly influenced and changed our daily life, it includes the way people work. Since the covid-19 begin to spread, it has caused more than 6 million deaths and 514 million confirmed cases (Lina Emmesjö, Jenny Hallgren1 and Catharina Gillsjö). Because of the huge number of deaths and infected people, it is important for a company to keep employees safe from the pandemic. So, many employers have responded quickly to adopting a policy that let all the employees work in their home to ensure the safety of them while maintaining business continuity. This policy has attracted widespread attention in society since its adoption, and it has led to a lot of question and debates among many people. Moreover, many companies have decided to keep this policy even the pandemic is past, because this policy not only helped the company overcome the difficult times, but also let the company to succeed and advanced. Working from home policy is suitable to many employees and provide many benefits for both employees and employers.

First, the feasibility of the working from home policy is the first thing need to be considered, because even the best policy is worthless if it cannot be effectively executed. However, the feasibility of working from home is also influenced by many factors. A study shows that the extent to which Canadian have jobs suitable for remote work differs significantly across various factors. Approximately 59% of people who have attained a bachelor’s degree or higher can finish their works in their home, while nearly 10% of those who did not finish their high school have the same capability (Deng, Messacar and Morssette). Because those people without a high school diploma typically work in jobs which require face-to-face interaction, so this data shows a significant portion of people who can work from home.@贴吧大艺术家

Second, the productivity of employees and their job satisfaction are also an important survey. Mehdi and Morissette’s study shows that the majority of those employees (90%) expressed to be equally or more effectively while working from home than they were working in their office. In addition, 80% of those employees say that they still want to work at least half of their work hour in their home even the pandemic is past (Mehdi and Morissette). In addition, offering employees more freedom and flexibility can improve their job satisfaction. According to Gang and Rijst (2015), the ability to work from home can enhance performance because it provides employees more flexibility to determine their work schedules and workplace. Many employees express satisfaction with the increased flexibility that the working from home policy provides (Zhisheng Chen).@贴吧大艺术家

Third, the working from home policy also have positive impacts on the environment. With the increase number of people who work remotely, there is a decrease in traffic congestion and air pollution. According to Morissette, Deng and Messacar (2021), if all workers who can work from home do so, it will reduce greenhouse emissions by about 8.6 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent in Canada every year (Mehdi and Morissette). This is just greenhouse emissions in Canada, if every company can let their employees work remotely it will greatly change the environment. Because of the reduction of commuting time, it also brought many benefits to company. For instance, the company can save costs by reduce office space or even cancel the office. At the same time, employees can save commuting expenses. @贴吧大艺术家

It might be argued that working from home policy will cause a lot of health problem. Of course people enjoy the benefits of the working from home policy, sitting for long period of time, lack of exercise and bad sitting posture may all endanger one’s physical health. For example, these habits may hurt the shoulder, neck and upper extremities. In addition to physical injuries, there are also some psychological issues. It can lead to increased emotional problems such as loneliness, anxiety and depression. However, there are a lot of ways to solve these problems. For those physical issues, people can resolve in early stage by brief rest like stand up and walk around or do some simple stretching exercises. Also, people can adopt an ergonomic approach to set up home workplace to solve the problem in the long term (Birimoglu Okuyan). For psychological issues, people can solve by going for walk and breathing fresh air, also it is important to stay in touch with colleagues, friends and family. @贴吧大艺术家

In conclusion, working from home policy provide benefits more than it disadvantages. Employee not only can feel more comfortable at home, but also let the company maintaining business continuity. People should to know that a policy which can make everyone satisfy and most of them are likely to follow is a good policy, not to let people working in a place that they doesn’t like. In the future, if a company’s productivity become lower and lower, they can try to offer employees more options to choose, to let them determine when and where to work. It may let the company recover from this bad situation. @贴吧大艺术家
