“The witch is being held in the cellar at the parsonage.”
I followed the men, who carried lanterns. Every breath filled the air with steam in the freezing cold, and a blue twilight had descended upon the snowy estate. Rimy spruce tops were glowing under a crescent moon as sharp as a nail’s edge.
“Won’t she freeze to death down there?” I asked. A prickly winter breeze burrowed its way under my coat.
“Listen, young mister, we haven’t got proper jails up here,” Bailiff Skytte snarled and glanced at me. His scarred, pox-torn face looked grim. “We are in the middle of the wilds. A long way from towns and castles. We haven’t had the need to detain murderers here.”
“Your actions have been proper, my good Bailiff,” a tall man in front of me interjected. His ivory hair was tied neatly in the back. “Satan’s might diminishes under a steeple. Here, the Defiler of Souls cannot aid his minion’s escape.”

"她在下面不会被冻死吗？" 我问道。一阵刺骨的冬风从我的大衣下钻了出来。
"听着，年轻的先生，我们这里没有合适的监狱。"法警斯凯特 (Skytte) 咆哮着瞥了我一眼。他那张伤痕累累、长满痘痘的脸看起来很阴沉。"我们是在荒野之中。离城镇和城堡很远。我们还没有必要在这里拘留杀人犯。"

The man was Johan Kalmander, a proxy for Svealand’s Royal Court, from Stockholm.
A witch hunter.
We had ridden the same sleigh here, through the wilderness, all the way from Hämeenlinna. A three days’ journey across a land rАVaged by famine and scarcity. Over the frozen lakes, where an unyielding gale had slashed our faces and wolves had raced to catch us.
“Was it Bishop Gezelius who sent you?” the bailiff asked and turned to face me. “What sort of man are you, anyway?”
“My name is Arvid Kuura. I am a doctor and a notary. I’ve worked for the bishop’s office ever since I graduated the Royal Academy of Turku ТWo years ago.”
“Why exactly does the honorable bishop care about this?” Skytte huffed.
“An unexplained act of murder. Four people dead. Maybe a fifth… a small child…” I mumbled. “This pastor of yours had written the bishop and asked for help.”

"一场无法解释的谋杀行为。四个人死了。也许还有第五个......一个小孩子......" 我喃喃地说。"你的这位牧师曾写信给主教，请求帮助。”
