Daughtry forgoes its current single, Life After You, in favor of September. Seeing Chris on the same stage that Lee performed on last night highlights the differences between them: Lee has a naturally raspier delivery, even in his quieter moments, but Chris can hit the notes. Neither's a particularly dynamic performer, but Chris has learned how to project more; Lee often still seems stuck within himself.
After the performance, Ryan invites Chris to the edge of the stage and asks about the current arena tour. "It doesn't get old," Chris says. "It's an amazing feeling every night." September, he says, reminds him of who he was and the small town he grew up in.
Ryan asks Ellen what this year's contestants can take away from a performer like Daughtry. Her reply: "I'm so proud of y'all." Worthless. Absolutely worthless.
Chris, at least, offers them something useful. "Stay hungry. Stay hungry and actually don't compromise the music that you love."
