One morning while searching for her, my attention was drawn to the screeching sound of a honey badger in the bush. To my surprise, the five cubs were clawing and biting the honey badger, intent on killing it. As the cubs continued their assault, the honey badger was bravely defending himself. The cubs eventually aborted their mission and ran off to join their mother. She continued on her hunt and climbed a termite mound to look for prey. We watched while she stalked a male impala, but it got away. For some time, there was no prey in sight but then after about 30 minutes, from a distance, an unlucky unsuspecting female impala wondered away from the rest of the herd, which attracted the attention of the cheetah. Instantly her posture changed, she ran down the mound and stalked to within close proximity of the impala, leaving it with no escape. She killed it after a short chase and then went to fetch her cubs for a well-deserved meal.
